You can get aftermarket scales for the ESEE line of knives here:

http://www.the-knife-connection.com/customhandles.html

I installed a set on my RC-4 (ESEE-4) and it really made a big difference as I have large hands and long fingers. It really transformed the knife. You can also by just the blades and the custom handles from the getgo. The 4 is on the top in the pic, above the 3.

This just my opinion, don't know what you mean by "breaking the bank". On the low end the Gerber Prodigy next I pick the Esee-5 and next I pick the Tops Black Star Evo and if you really want to sink some green then get a Spartan.

Any 4 to 6 inch hunting knife. If you can't find something used, like in your own toolbox, go to Walmart and see what they have under 50 bucks. If you get a Buck, put some big rubber bands around the handle to make it less slippery. With the money your save by not buying a RamboDeluxe, take the missus out to eat at China Panda.

My old air force survival knife made it out of the toolbox a year or 2 ago because the leather handle had a mold problem. It now hangs on my bedroom wall and goes on my belt when I am working in the garden. Bought a newer model with rubber handle by Ontario, under 50 bucks. Duller than a butter knife, but 1095 sharpens up fine. Great feel, no mold, it is hidden in my bedroom and goes on an occasional hike with me.

I carry a 6 blade Swiss army knife daily, but if not I would have one in my bugout bag.

Actually, there are probably a bunch of kitchen knives that you could pick up used at a thrift shop that would not be a bad addition to your emergency fit. The again, I have a $4 Tramotina ss kitchen knife that would slit a sentry's throat as well or better than some of the military knives. Came in a 2 pack at a bigbox warehouse.

Sold off my Kabars because they didn't fit my hands. Bye bye to the Gerber mark 2s because they served no purpose other than people stabbers and I like more utilitarian knives.

An old German 10" Bowie knife I couldn't sell off at guns shows is now my watermelon knife. It's in my nightstand for safekeeping.

I have to agree. I have nothing against larger, beefier survival knives (I own a few) but Mora's go in all my camping and survival kits. They're so cheap and useful there's no reason not to.

I agree with the mora. Good knives, easy as pie to maintain, excellent all around outdoors knives. I have more expensive and tougher knives, and i like them just fine (particularly my becker), but for most tasks the mora is more than sufficient. The cost/value ratio is off the charts, too.

Not quite in the same spirit as the original post, but...

Maybe this paraphrased comment from Bill Jordan might be worth some consideration.

I don't have the original copy. At that time, there was lots of ink put to paper about 'Survivalist' issues, bug-out-bags, retreats, 4WD vehicles, etc.. What Mr. Jordan had to offer was the comment that what 'you have close to hand when you confront whatever it is that you must deal with, is the best survival tool.'

He put it a little more bluntly when he offered the comment, that, 'If you have to go get it, you're probably too late.'

There is some spooky stuff involved, but, if you haven't read Stephen King's 'The Stand', it might be worth your time. It isn't gonna make you a Road Warrior, but it offers some reflective enterainment.

respectfully,

salty

KBar or larger size swiss army knives are the ones i typcially bring. Both under $100 and i wouldnt cry if i lost them.

Good ole Bill. He told it like it was.
