Needing new Bushcraft knife

Ole hyvä :)

I can only speak of my own experiences and I've found that what looks cool on the internet doesn't always work when you really need it too. I've also learnt most from guys who have never visited an internet forum. :)

Having lived in Nepal many years ago, I can say that a good kukri knife can do great all-around service as a knife and hatchet. For fine work like slicing meat and veggies, you hold the knife still between your feet or knees and move the food against it. That said, a proper kukri is actually a set which in includes an unsharpened, knife-shaped sharpening steel and a small knife (about a 2" blade) for fine work. I think the combination of a small Mora knife and cheap Cold Steel kukri, less that $40 for both, would be a very effective and inexpensive survival set.

Probably too late to add my 2C worth but... a Cold Steel Bushman is nearly indestructible. If you're lucky, you can find an original one (Taiwan) on ebay for around $40 (it has the leather sheath). I don't have experience with the new China-made ones. My original "user" is really a tough knife that does more heavy tasks than any knife should be expected to do. It's decent steel that stays sharp and has a good protective coating. I know it's not made in the USA but it is what it is.

I have both a Buck and a Cold Steel large fixed blades around 7 and a half inch blades thats about as big a knife as I want to carry it is about thirteen inchs over all if Im chopping wood I grab an axe a decent small axe weighs about the same as a huge bowie knife but is more usefull over all

Another excellent ax is the Estwing. They make a couple versions of their ' Campers Ax '. These are great cutting tools. I aways include one in my camping gear. Lite, USA made & steel handle. There should be one to fit your needs. The 'Spetsnaz Shovel ' from ColdSteel will also do a fair job of chopping things & makes a good E - Tool. But you would still need a long blade for other work. The ' Raider Bowie ' from ColdSteel will stand up to chopping, along with being an excellent Bowie Knife! There Freedom series has metal caps & handguards. All of these axes & knives come with decent sheaths or covers. I tryed to find one tool to do it all & learned to get the right tool for the job. Even if it means carrying 2 tools.Otherwise you can just be wasting time & money! Good luck in your search!

ESEE 4, 5, 6. Backed up with Izula. I use a BK2 with an Izula. All 1095. ESEE has a great warranty. I am looking at an esse 6 next. Survive knives is said to have a great product with great support. Tops BOB looks good too. The BK2 is heavy as is the ESEE 5. Becker has a bunch of other knives too that look good. I also use a Mora and a Wetterlings hatchet at times. Lots of info out there check out you tube :)

Cheapest and lightest fix is a 12 to 16 inch machete. Do the inicial sharpening on a belt sander, then resharpen as needed with a file or medium/coarse stone.

an ontario spec 8 is too heavy for carry, but nice around the yard or vehicle carry.
