Survival Scenarios. Which Rifle and Why?

I've concluded that if SHTF, the biggest threat to survival for many here is that they won't be able to yak it up with each other online about survival guns, and will go insane and kill themselves.

I'd leave my black guns and scoped rifles on the rack. If I had to get into a battle requiring semi or auto rifles, I'd probably be overwhelmed.

Survival is about eating and not being eaten. All I need is a .22lr to take game up to deer. Also 2-legged if necessary. Not as loud if you don't want others to know where you are.

Ill take the SKS easyrider....

I have one and want another. Ill have another pretty soon too.

Im choosing it because I have one and plenty of ammo for it. I still think a simple .22 can be a winner.

I agree with the 22lr.

I'd also take my Marlin 336. Both rifles are scoped but the Marlin has iron sights as well...so if I am bumbling around in the aftermath of world destruction and drop my scoped Marlin I can easily ditch the broken scope and use iron sights. Not to mention .30-30 rounds are everywhere and a guy could probably find a box in a blown up sporting goods store because all the AR and AK owners will have pillaged all the popular 7.62 and 5.56 ammo.

Of course this only applies to some unimaginable scenario but honestly it is the reason I sold my AR and opted for the bolt action .270 and Marlin .30-30 (just more reliable guns IMO).

I am going to start hunting next season (a first for me) and I think that no matter what weapon you have you should know how to process and hunt game animals to be able to eat.

First of all, we have to define "survival." Most survival situations today involve storms, earthquakes, and so on. I've been through several in the past year -- including an ice storm that took me two days to cut my way through downed timber to the county road, and knocked out power for two weeks.

In situations like these, a firearm is comforting, but not often actually used. Whatever guns you have in the safe will do fine for protection.

If the situation requires hunting -- use your hunting rifle! That's what it was designed for.

If the situation requires combat -- you need friends. A lone man in a combat situation is dead meat.

For a real life survival rifle, any reliable rifle using a cartridge sufficient to take the common local animals.
For Internet discussion board scenarios, there is only one choice: the Webley-Vickers 50.80.

i want 2 my pops rem mohawk 600=5.56 and a good 22LR thats all i will need up in my little tree house.

I think I'd side with Vern and team up with neighbor's.

Now, when I think "survival" rifle, I think "utility" rifle. Something to knock vermin out of the garden (you are going to provide and protect your food, right?), knock down straggling 'yotes and all of the feral dogs that will exist after the firefights everybody else is going to have. ;) Something to put meat on the table as well. I'd have to vote lever-action .30-30, .44 or .357. Heck, I'd take a .22 Magnum lever in a pinch.

call me boring or unimaginative, but in a real survival scenario I envision people pretty much being stuck with whatever they have minus anything they may have to trade for vital goods. So... run what you brought\bought! Diversity seems good here (i.e., shotgun, rifle(s), pistols...) I'd only stick to the most common and universally available of calibers.

Any of the choice, but I'd have an AK (because that's what I own). The reliability is a plus.

an AK would rust due to corrosive ammo
Most 7.62x39mm is noncorrosive, including Wolf, Brown/Silver Bear, Barnaul, and Golden Tiger, not to mention the domestic brands. The exception would be old Warsaw Pact milsurp ammunition, which I don't use.

Well it would depend where I was . This is important as far as ammo. If I were in the US an AR would be it ammo is available . In the middle of the Middle East or Africa an SKS because ammo is available. Beyond that they all will do the job.

Oh no, another SHFT thread:cuss:, well at least no one has said how they tricked out their AR with 5k+ of ammo that weighs 100+lbs.+ gear.

But mine would be a Remington 700 in .308 or 30-06, an M24 with all the accesories because the whole package comes with irons, it's just ALOT of money for the complete package, 5k+ I think, without a scope, but I'd be a great rifle. Also I'd have a good solid pistol.

Has anyone ever thought of a TC Encore pistol in any caliber from .22-.????? And it's supposed to be very accuate, it can also fit in a backpack if need be, and it's light.

A .22 bolt action would be a very reasonable option for weight purposes, but fending off an attacker (if need be) I'd rather have one of the guns listed above, hope this helps:)

I'd like a well built .30-06 , or .308 bolt action with a good, solid scope, and backup iron sights. For backup, a Ruger GP100 6". And, if at all possible, a pet Tyranasaurus Rex , with a saddle.

Short term: AR. I'm faster with it and it's more accurate.

Long term: AK. It's the Energizer bunny of rifles. If some neolithic tribesman in BFE can keep one running since 1958, I should have no problems.

BSW

Well the only thing an AK gots on a bold rifle is rate of fire, other than that the bolt rifle will reign supreme (correct me if I'm wrong), for firefights an AK, for survival, a bolt rifle.

One gun for any scenario:

Any of the AK-47 variants, preferably a Chinese or a Bulgarian make, just because they look oh-so-nice! Ammo can be found anywhere, in gun/sporting stores. If you find yourself in any country besides the US, the 7.62x39 will be abundant everywhere unlike the 5.56.

For survival, AR-15, glock 19 or 23 and a .17hmr rifle with scope. Covers all your bases.
Shotgun ammo just takes up to much space.

But, I also have a bunch of guns that I have on hand as trade fodder. To bad I'll have removed the firing pin before I trade it.

My favorite long term ITSHTF survival rifle, (get ready... ready?... all right, start laughing!)

My 22LR!

Okay, i know...

Here, I can carry 500 rounds of ammo in a waist pack. (so there)
And it costs $20 to $35 per brick!
Plus another 2000 in a single can in my truck.
That costs about $100 bucks!

I can unload 10 rounds fast into a tin can at 50 yards. No barrel climb...
My Ruger 10-22 with supers can gopher at 100 yards, shoot area to 200.

A 22 rifle can be very light and very very small.
Costs less than a third of most semi-autos
is more durable because of the lower stresses.

And, the best survival rifle... is the one you have several of to hand out to friends and make a posse, and the one that never runs out of ammo.

Okay, rip away...

(p.s. also have my 12g's, M1A, and Glocks. Said favorite, not only!)
