surviverman

In a situation like that I think a small caliber like .22. Mostly because I see a whole lot more rabbits, squirrels, birds etc. than moose, bears or elk. Also a .22 WILL work for deer if need be, hogs also for that matter. From a survival standpoint that is. So don't hit me with the ethical side of it. I really can't imagine gettin stranded in africa so I won't contribute in that way. Also you can carry 1000000000? rounds comfortably. Although I personally always gravitate to my shotguns because of versatility. I'm thinking of weight.

Yeah, a .22, no question. Very useful for eating. Marlin 60.

That kid that died up in alaska got a moose with his .22.

In the US, every where but Alaska would be AR-15 and under barrel shotgun... In Africa, short-barreled FAL, and under barrel M-203. I could invent a new trail mix for my long walk back to civilization, " cape buffalo bits".

Still 2 Many Choices!?

I think some of you guys are copping out a little bit here. I believe, by mentioning Africa and North America in the same breath, the op is asking for opinions on what one firearm you would choose if you happened to be placed anywhere on the planet, willy-nilly. And I'm guessing he means you have no advance notice as to where you'll end up at. So the weapon you choose should be as adaptable as possible to meet as many different contingencies as might present themselves, from feeding yourself to keeping yourself from being fed on. Which is why I recommended a 12 gauge repeater, coupled with shells loaded with birdshot, buckshot and slugs. Though lacking more than three multiple shots an even better idea might be a drilling with, say, two 12 gauge barrels on top and a 30-06 barrel underneath.

to hunt and defend myself; a 38/357 carbine or an ar15 223 and a 22lr conversion
as to large predetors, i am more concerned with survival than confrontation

Well, if I had an unlimited supply of ammo, I'd say a robinson XCR in 6.5 with a tritium red dot scope and a detatchable 4x magnifier. That way I could use the unmagnified full-auto for defense, and the magnified semi-auto for hunting/sniping.

Gold tiger stripe Deagle (to blend in with surroundings). With the 10" barrel and a Zeiss 50x magnification scope. For sniping. And assault.

Deagle serves all purposes. Obey the Deagle.

And a deck of cards. Lay out a game of solitaire and sure enough, some SOB will come up and say, "Put the red five on the black six."
That gave me a good laugh!

I'd have to think 12Gauge with rifle sights and a mix of birdshot and slugs.

From the guns I own, it would be the Tikka m/55 in .308

If I could choose freely it would be an FN-FNC in .223 with an aimpoint.

22LR with tons of ammo because you have far more to fear from the smaller beasties than that large ones.

Epic. You could transport the ammo in your tactical wheelbarrow.

Well since the op said rifle that I currently own.... I would have to go with my ruger mini 14. Only because I have enough clips to carry a lot of ammo and have the ability to have many rapid fire follow up shots in the form of a rugid rifle that would need little cleaning. As for worrying about the big animals in Africa I would hide or avoid as much as possible. (If it were just North America I would take my marlin 336.)

When I was flying in Alaska, my "survival kit" included a Savage 24 in 30/30 over 20 gauge, amoung other things.

trusty m4 with at least like 500 rds of ammo - or a springfield arms socom II (i know both are more tact rifles than hunting, but the socom II can work fine in either condition)

I'll take my savage 14 in 30-06 with my nikon buckmaster 6-18 scope
Toss in a ghilie suit and I could pick off anythen within a couple hundred yards
