Three teenagers had to abort an attempted home invasion near Newport early Saturday when one of the assailants accidentally shot himself in the groin, New Castle County police said.

Jonathan Rodriguez, 17, was in stable condition Saturday at Christiana Hospital from the single gunshot wound. Rodriguez, of the 100 block of East Plover Drive in Bear, shot himself as pounded on the door with the butt of a handgun, county police spokesman Officer 1st Class Trinidad Navarro said.

"This is one you'll hear about in the bizarro files about one of the world's dumbest criminals,'' Navarro said.

Navarro said the attempted robbery occurred about 12:30 a.m. Saturday in the 300 block of Matthes Ave. in Elmhurst. The home's resident told police he was watching a movie with a few friends when they heard banging on the front door.

"The door started to bulge and the glass broke,'' Navarro said. "So the people inside bolted out the window. At that time they heard one of the suspects claim he had been shot.''

The three assailants fled in a blue Chevrolet Lumina. The resident called police, and several officers drove to Christiana Hospital to search for the car and the suspects. They found the car in the parking lot.

Joseph Denham, 18, of the first block of Curlew Circle in Bear, was arrested at the hospital without incident. Denham was taken to county police headquarters, where he told police he and the others had planned to rob marijuana from the home, according to the arrest affidavit.

Later Saturday, police arrested Daniel Cote, 19, of the 1500 block of Bonridge Road, near Elsmere.

Rodriguez was being treated in the emergency room at the hospital, where he underwent surgery for his injuries.

The three teens were charged with first-degree attempted robbery, possessing a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, burglary and conspiracy.

Denham and Cote were sent to Gander Hill prison in Wilmington in lieu of $25,000 secured bail. Navarro said Rodriguez would be arraigned upon release from the hospital.

What a sissy. He shoots himself and then seeks medical help.

Like Sgt. Barnes said, "Take the pain!"
