Just got a hold of a beautiful svt still packed in cosmoline. I really want to go shoot this tomorrow but all I have is corrosive 147gr and 180gr, or commercial 203gr. I do not want to shoot any corrosive in this gun. So to anyone with actual experience, will 203gr hurt my rifle, or should I just wait the week to get some 147gr commercial ammo in the mail? I hope I dont need to wait but this one is so sweet I will if I have to. :(

Congrats on the new rifle. Very cool .
I have always wanted to shoot one of those :) .

Use the lighter weight rounds which are not at the top power levels. You do not want to try to get spare parts for them, as getting accessories and parts for these things could very rapidly add up to the price of the weapon itself. $150 magazines anybody? The information is freely available on the internet, but I'll save you some time. http://gk43forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1158

I only shoot new manufacture commercial in my SVT, but that's your call. Just be sure to clean every little crevase if you shoot surplus from it.

That being said, I bought a gas nut wrench shortly after I got the SVT. Playing with different ammo and the gas nut setting, the 150 gr. rounds are the only one I can get to cycle to my liking. The 180s had enough pressure to rip the extractor right off the rim (sometimes taking part of the rim with it). On the absolute lowest setting, it would do this once every 3-5 rounds. The 150s function flawlessly on the lowest setting, and still throws the brass a country mile.

Enjoy the SVT. Mine's one of my favorite shooters. Just behind my Garand and ahead of my AG-42b.

I only run 150gr or less in my SVT and only modern ammo...no surplus stuff.

If it was me I would just wait for the other ammo.

Also if you are going to use the surplus ammo start the gas system at the lowest setting and work your way up till you will feed and eject correctly.

These rifles are great fun....enjoy...and checkout gunboards forums for some good stuff on WWII soviet weapons.

Here is mine

I figured, I promise to use no corrosive in this beauty unless of course in a life or death situation. Unfortunately this rifle did my firearms budget in for the year, so no ammo orders unless I sell the AR or wait till January says the wife. :banghead: It wont be the longest stretch between buying something and shooting it, but maybe the hardest.

Just tell her you know what santa can bring you :)

And give her....ahhh.....santa part numbers.
