Hey guys,

I want this gun

See under the barrel, how it is not bent up, like the bottom pic...

How would a guy go about finding one like the top and not end up with one like the bottom.

From what I understand, they are both model 29, does this come in .357 mag? I want to give this to my father for a gift, I dont know much about revolvers...

The 29 (carbon steel, can be blue or nickel-plated) and 629 (stainless steel) are .44 Magnum revolvers based on the N Frame.

Similar .357 Magnum revolvers are the 620 and 686, based on the L Frame, slightly smaller than the N.

The 620 has the half lug and 7 shots, the 686 has the full lug (what you want) and 6 shots, and the 686 Plus has the full lug and 7 shots.

The 586 was the blue version, but it is not currently being produced.

If ya want the N frame in 357, the models 27 & 28 come to mind. But they won't have the full underlug.

It's been a long time since I've seen the gun in that picture, but it's a 44 mag stainless which makes it a 629 (dash something), silhouette version (notice the adjustable front sight), it's been magnaported (see those slots underneath the front sight?), and it's wearing Hogue grips.

Where did the picture come from?

Finding a full lug 44 won't be as difficult as finding a silhouette model.
 
thanks guys, The pic came from a thread on THR, It dident say what it was besides model 29...

So now I'm looking for a 686 or 686+

I think the dash means combat model... whatever that means...

If the gun in the picture is a model 29, then in addition to somebody having had it magnaported and installing Hogue grips, they apparantly had it hard chromed as well.

They sunk some money into it.
 
Here's a picture of a Model 29. It's an early 29-2 with a 6 1/2" barrel. The dash two stands for Model 29, second change. This one is a "Dirty Harry Special". It's a sweetheart to shoot and very light pull on D/A.

That is a gorgeous Model 29! Reminds me why I love blued carbon steel and wood stocks so much. Perfection!

I like stainless okay too, just not as much as blue.

If you are looking for a full lug, stainless 357 Magnum, then the S&W 686 or Ruger GP100 are both excellent guns. IMO, which you choose is just a matter of preference.

Here are two pics of my 4" 686 wearing Ahrends wood stocks. I have followed with a Ruger GP100 pic just for ease of comparison (it is not mine):

That's called the barrel lug - on the "bent up one" that is just an ejector shroud, it is not a weighted lug. It is there to add weight to help control recoil. Slows down the handling and pointing of the gun, but it does do it's job. And it looks good, too, I agree.

If you want a .44, then you want a 629 "Classic Hunter" which had a full lug. They came out about 1990 or so and there are lots of them out there.

If you want a .357, then what you want is to get a pre-lock 686. You can have it bead-blasted for a little bit of money (a fraction of hard chroming) and it will look about the same and be as durable as you could ask. I actually think the pistol in your photo is just bead-blasted, not hard chromed. If it were hard chromed, the turn line would have worn dark, not polished shiny like stainless steel.

The 686 is called the "Distinguished Combat Magnum" - so it's already "combat" as much as that means anything in pistols...

or 586 and get it chrome'd

Please don't wreck a nice 586 by hard-chroming it; just stick with a 686 and bead blast it. Much cheaper and practical and it gets you what you want.

This is a 686 "no dash" with plain target grips. I went for shiny instead of matte, but a bead-blast would make it look just like the gun you initially pictured.

First things first. The Md 29 (blued) and Md 629 (stainless) are .44 Magnums and are built on N (large) frames.
The Md 686 (stainless) is a .357 and is built on an L (medium) frame which is smaller than an N frame.
The under lug on the .44M is available as a 629 'Classic' and the .357M 686 is also availble and also has the under lug. Confussed, don't be, Smith's can be confusing at times because they make so many models in so many differnt calibers.

The Smith you are lusting after has a a Mag-Na Port cut in the barrel and right above that, the little "wheel" is for adjusting the 4 position front sight. It also has Houge wood grips ----- this may have been a S&W Performance Center gun .
