I am looking at a Model 14 on Tuesday. I am not sure yet, but it is probably a 14-3 or 14-4. It is either NIB or like new and has the manual and tools to boot. I think it has the stock trigger and hammer.

What is a good ballpark for this? The seller is asking ~$500.

Thanks!

That's what my dad paid for one a few years as I recall. I believe it's a good price for one.

Thanks for the replies. I have a buddy that has one with the target trigger and hammer and it is a real tack driver compared to anything I have shot before. He got it for a bit less but it had been shot some...

About 5 to 7 years ago, Model 14s could still be found for $350 or less. Then, suddenly, in about 2007/8 the price seem to skyrocket to $500+ overnight. For a time in '08 they were hitting the $600 mark, but have come back down a bit since. Not sure exactly why, other .38 K Frames did not experience as rapid a price increase during this timeframe.

Oh well, glad I got my $330 14-4 5+ years ago.

Question????

What are you going to do with this revolver if you do get it? If you plan to put it in the back of a safe and watch the value go up, it probably will - but slowly.

If you plan to shoot it, why pay for a collectable? One that's got some mileage on in the form of worn bluing, but is otherwise perfect, but missing the box and accessories can probably be had for $350 more or less.

If you go out and shoot the $500 gun it will quickly become worth $400 or less.

Good point. I think he has a second one that is about 80% for $350.

It is going to be a babied shooter. I would also like to get into a pistol league at some point...

They are called the Masterpiece for a good reason.

I bought my 14-4 about 7-8 years ago. At the time shooter grade guns were selling for $250, I paid $350 for a NIB specimen, I have shot many thousands of rounds out of that gun and it is now probably in about 90-95% condition. I see them in about the same condition as mine now for $4-450 with NIB priced for $5-600, I don't know if they are actually selling at that price. I love my Model 14 so much you are going to have to make a very high offer for me to even consider selling it, it's just the perfect gun for me, and every little rub mark ding and scratch is mine, and I can tell you how it got there. So at the time I thought I paid too much for my 14, but now I look at it as, I just bought it too soon. Even if $500 is a little too much, 5 years from now you will not even care about that extra $50-100, and a NEW Classic 14 from the factory is $800 with the added hole in the side.

I saw one a couple of weeks ago at my LGS. It was a LNIB Model 14 no dash which appeared to have been unfired. Asking price was around $650. I thought about it for a little while but couldn't rationalize spending that kind of money on a gun that I was never going to shoot. Would rather find one that's slightly worn but still in great shape, for a lot less money.

Well the $350 gun was a well worn 14-3.

I went ahead and picked up the NIB 14-3 for $500. Box, tools, manual and warantee card included. It appears to be unfired, but I think I am going to have to fix that pretty soon. It was born (and bought) to shoot and all of the other used guns I have bought have been well used. This one will be babied...

The original buyer bought if for $115 and I think it is probably a late 60's (1K 30xx) birthday. I did a little thought expirement with this and found an inflation calculator. $115 in 1970 is ~$640 today. It seems saving it all these years did not keep up with inflation. Also considering that new ones run $700+ it appears that you can't buy what you used to...

Thanks for the input guys.

I think that's a pretty good deal. You're going to spend more for pretty much anything new on the market, and, in my opinion, the K frames are still some of the best looking and performing guns out there. My 14-3 keeps up with some pretty high-test target .22s.

For whatever people say they are paying for these guns, the point is that you have to be able to find one that you can actually buy for that price. Also keep in mind that S&W is selling the Model 14 these days...with an MSRP of $909.

Like I said, a pretty good deal.

Good deal nowadays, I agree--and if you like how a revolver looks as much as how it shoots, then paying a premium for a NIB gun you're going to baby anyway makes sense to me. Then again, you could just lay down eight or nine crisp 50s and see what the guy says... ;)

There's no better target revolver. Here's my 14-4:

They are pretty guns. I'll post up a picture of mine here soon.

Thanks again.
