Swapping barrels on Savage 111

Are there any Savage or aftermarket heavier barrels available which will work with the Savage 111 in .308 or 30-06?

For 308 absolutely. For 30-06, I'm not sure, but you could get a 308 and have it re-chambered for 30-06 without much trouble. The 111 was once the fancy 110, but that has been replaced by the 114. In any case, they are all the same action-wise.

Or, you could have a heavy barrel made relatively inexpensively in your choice of contour. Savage barrels can easily be changed in your garage/basement - all you need is a barrel vise and the wrench to turn the barrel nut on/off, and a headspace gauge.

Brownells carries a few aftermarket barrels for the Savage, made by E.R. Shaw. Shaw can make you whatever you want for an eminently reasonable price, too.

Yeah, I've changed out the barrel on a 111, going from 30-06 to 270 and it was a snap (literally as the extractor snaps over the go gauge).

There are 2 other questions you have to answer before you swap barrels:
1. Is the case head diameter the same? Going from 7mm Rem Mag to 308 won't work, nor will going from 223 to 308 because they have different sizes of bolt face.

2. Do you expect rounds to feed from the magazine? The magazine box for a 308, 7mm Rem Mag and 223 are different too.

A 15 minute job, once you find your barrel. The fourm on Savageshooters.com has a lot of good info. Hopefully, the short action I just traded a long action for will come in tomorrow, and I can put my Shilen 6.5x47 Lapua on..........but like DnPRK said, 3 bolt heads, three magazines.

Actually I want to buy one of the ones with the regular .308 barrel on sale, then swap in a heavier .308 later.

Here is a little info on Savages
model 11's are short action and 111's are long action.308 is short action and 30-06 is long action.If you go and buy a Savage in 308 it will be a short action(model 11) and you can't change it to a 30-06 but you can get a 111 in 30-06 and change it to a 308 but not sure how it would feed with the longer bolt travel.
Savage models with a 2 number model # are short actions(10,11,12,14,and 16) and the ones with 3 #'s are long actions(110,111,112,114,and 116)But there is also a 110 action that I think was made in the early 70's that is inbetween in lenght and you may want to stay away from them,they are called J actions.Bolt faces can be changed and if you ever swap back and forth with a 223 I think firing pins may also need to be changed.
A lot of people have become addicted to Savages because it is so easy to swap calibers and there are a lot of different stocks out there to match what ever barrel weight and action lenght you put together.Pluss the accuracy is right up there with the big money guns.
