I'm looking for a cleaning kit for my first Mauser. Since I have not found a specific kit, I was wondering if I could use the German k98 tobacco tin cleaning kit and replace pieces (which would be?).

If you do find one, I'm hoping to purchase it from a wholesale distributor or small store to keep it simple. Any posts regarding those are appreciated.

Thanks.

A couple things:

First, dont use a German 8mm pull-through on your 6.5 Swede mauser. Same goes for the brush. I don't even know if they'll fit in the smaller diameter bore.

Second, the Swede Mauser is a really nice example of rifle made to "old world" standards, even for a military rifle. It really deserves something better then an old mil-surp cleaning gear.

I reccomend a one-piece Dewey teflon coated cleaning rod in the appropriate caliber with the approrpiate attachments. The Dewey rod will keep you from damaging your bore with a multi-piece jointed steel rod.

Don't forgot to alwas clean from the chamber end.

If you want something smaller to pack in your gear, get an Otis cleaning kit. It's a little more pricey then something mil-surp, but much nicer quality and will keep you from damaging your rifle.

Now, if you want to have a Swede surplus cleaning kit just to have one, and maybe use in a pinch when you don't have anything else available, that's coo. But, for most routine cleaning I really suggest something more modern. In any event skip the rather crude German 8mm cleaning gear.
