Hi Guys:
I've posted a few photos of the "P" series K31 I recently acquired and restored. I took it to the range today for the first time to do some testing and set-up. The results were stunning. Stupid accurate During the restoration I noticed somethings that were done to make it this way. The action was shimmed in the stock, it had a trigger job done and it is sweet
I had the blued metal Cerakoted in graphite black with the exception of the barrel itself. The Hammerli barrel has a very cool plum colored patina to the bluing. My experience with metal that shows this plum color after bluing I believe indicates high nickle content in the steel. I learned this from when I would have nickle steel 1903 bolt bodies blued. They would show the same plum color. So I liked it and preserved that feature by not Cerakoting the barrel itself.
And now here's a little something I just discovered. I have a couple M1 Garands. I also have the throat erosion gage for the M1 Garand. So the thought came to me to see how that gage would work on K31's. It works great. I have several K31's and a couple with what appears to be brand new barrels so I used those as a reference point. With the gage inserted in 2 different K31's with what appears to be new or near new Hammerli barrels the reading was 1.5. Then checking my other 10 more used K31's I came up with reading of from 2 to 4. The 4 being a barrel that has visible throat wear and the rest to a lesser degree.
So if any of you who have K31's and an M1 Garand throat erosion gage I ask if you could check yours and post your results. I'm trying to gather enough samples to make a call on what is a good reference point.
