I have a Springfield loaded and was thinking about changing out the factory MSH that has the keyed lock on it for a standard one. I was thinking of using Wilson Combat parts. But, is this an easy swap or something better left to a gunsmith.

The real reason I want to change is to be able to switch out springs. I do not believe that a normal spring will fit inside of the Springfield MSHs because of the lock.

Or, are there springs that will fit in that MSH without changing out the whole piece?

Thanks.

You can use standard mainsprings in an ILS housing.
You need:
mainspring,
mainspring cap (The ILS one is very long and grooved for the lock.),
mainspring cap pin (The ILS doesn't have one at all, but the hole is there.)

I de-ILSed my SA Ultra Compact this way. It took about half a pound off the trigger pull. And, if you ever have to show a lawyer that you are not hurting the children, it can still be locked. Turn the key at full cock and ease the hammer down til the mainspring cap stops against the lock.

I also replaced the titanium firing pin and its stiff spring with a Brown 826 steel pin and Wolff HD spring. Mine is a 9mm and the light pin/strong spring was letting the firing pin indent completely flatten. Not a confidence builder.

Thanks for the comment. I spoke with a local smith and he said that the entire MSH would have to be changed because the dimesions inside Springfield guns was different from the other MSH set-ups.

I wouldn't mind getting rid of the lock also, but that is not my initial reason for switching.
