I've been thinking about finally getting a double-barrelled SxS AOW made up by a local Class III, and I was curious about a few things:

1) Is the process the same as NFA machineguns, i.e. fingerprinting, CLEO signoff, etc...?

2) If I buy a normal shotgun and give it to the 'smith to chop and register, who pays the tax? Do I have to pay it twice (once for registering it, then again to get it back from him) and wait even longer?

3) How long does the whole registration process and transfer take?

4) What can I reasonably expect to pay for the choppin' and paperwork involved?

5) (last one) Any recommendations as to gauge? I would like to think I could handle a stockless, 12" 10-gauge like good ol' Doc Holliday, but I sure would like to keep the use of my right wrist...

Thanks

Note - In checking this up elsewhere, I've learned that in order for the gun to be an AOW rather than an SBS, it must not have originated with a shoulder stock...as every double that I have ever seen has a full size shoulder stock, this seems to mean that I would have to pay $200 instead of $5...is there any way around this? Could the manufacturer buy the parts for this gun, sans stock, and make it himself as a stockless shotgun?

It doesn't matter if it starts out AOW or SBS, it will still cost $200 to manufacture. The transfer fee of $5 only applies after that. If you go ahead and register it as a SBS, you can put a stock on it later if you desire. The way to do it is buy the shotgun you want to use, then submit ATF Form 1 requesting to manufacture the NFA weapon (along with fingerprints and $200). This will normally take around 90 days if you're not already in their system as owning NFA weapons.

When they return the approved forms to you, take the gun to the gunsmith and he can chop the barrels for you while you wait or you can pop the barrels off and ship them to a gunsmith.
