I've been thinking about finally getting a double-barrelled SxS AOW made up by a local Class III, and I was curious about a few things:
1) Is the process the same as NFA machineguns, i.e. fingerprinting, CLEO signoff, etc...?
2) If I buy a normal shotgun and give it to the 'smith to chop and register, who pays the tax? Do I have to pay it twice (once for registering it, then again to get it back from him) and wait even longer?
3) How long does the whole registration process and transfer take?
4) What can I reasonably expect to pay for the choppin' and paperwork involved?
5) (last one) Any recommendations as to gauge? I would like to think I could handle a stockless, 12" 10-gauge like good ol' Doc Holliday, but I sure would like to keep the use of my right wrist...
Thanks
Note - In checking this up elsewhere, I've learned that in order for the gun to be an AOW rather than an SBS, it must not have originated with a shoulder stock...as every double that I have ever seen has a full size shoulder stock, this seems to mean that I would have to pay $200 instead of $5...is there any way around this? Could the manufacturer buy the parts for this gun, sans stock, and make it himself as a stockless shotgun?
