Just picked up a SXS 12 ga, regulated at fifty yards with a 1oz rifled slug. Anyone else shooting a SXS for big game? I would post a pic but not sure how to do it yet, new to the site.

Many production side by side guns would not regulate within acceptable accuracy for using them as big game guns. You mention that yours is regulated , and typicaly that is either a lucky cut off barrel set, or an expensive process mostly left to high price guns.

I am not aware of anyone in my area that uses the S/S for shooting slugs. If there are some around I suspect they simply cut off the barrels, test fire the gun at various ranges and then set the differences in POI to memory.

My father once told me about a local guy that fabricated a SXS slug gun out of two rifled single shot 12ga. Said it would be POA for one barrel and 2" to the right for the other barrel at 50 yards. Never got a name of guy or investigated any further but it sounds really cool. I think there would be a market for a "double rifle slug gun" if a company would start making them. Would give you the feel of the big bore African double rifles for presumingly a much less cost. Plus I could deer hunt here in Ohio with it.

I believe there was an Italian company importing SXS and O/U slug guns, I saw a used o/u at a local gun show for $500. that I wanted bad but seeing that I'm perpetually broke I didn't get it.

Well, I went on a search looking for a gun that was specifically set up for slugs, due to reading an old post from this site. My search ended up with talking with Ken Owen whom I'm sure most of you heard of him before. I had asked if and how much it would cost to regulate one of my SxS and he said he was semi retired and,the cost would be prohibitive. After talking a while Ken mentioned he had one SxS left sitting that he had regulated years back and that I could buy it if I wanted. I said yes and asked if he would shoot it just to make sure everything was fine with it. Talked with him a few days later and he said he put two shots at fifty yards with one hole, so it was a done deal. Triggers are 5.5 lbs and the the rifle sights are set, couldn't be happier and consider myself very lucky to have gotten this gun. Been wanting a SxS slug gun for a long time so looking forward to this deer season. If someone can tell me how to post pics I would put a couple up.
I have to say that Ken is a true gentleman and not sure if he reads these posts but I thank you again.

Are you talking slugs, rifled slugs or patched round balls?

I spent a considerable amount of time testing PRBs and Lee's key slugs in my two SxS shotguns. The guns are not regulated but slugs were a lost cause with any barrel tried even with a thick denim X patch.
One gun shot both barrels within 3" of each other at 40 yards with a .715 PRB but all other combinations were worse.

I've read of a technique to regulate a SxS cheaply by filing the side of a barrel to change POA. I keep getting confused as to whether the side opposite of where you want it to shoot is filed or vice-versa.
I have been too much of a chicken to try it.

I'm talking about rifled slugs or foster slugs. These barrels were regulated like you regulate double rifle barrel. Some of the sabatti DR's had the grind adjustment, but most of those were returned. It's a fifty yard gun, so for just about any NA game that's within fifty yards is in trouble. Winchester slugs were used buy I think any 1 oz slug will work. He spent quite a few hours regulating this gun. If you go on you tube a search regulating DR's you'll see how it's done, very time consuming process.

PatoC.....,J. Beard in his work, Hawken Rifles, illustrates via photo several ML (smoothbores) guns regulated via muzzle cutting. From what I can tell the muzzles are cut to the opposite of the center of the coupled bbls. Believe the books out of print now but you ought to be able to find some ref & poss. pics on the IN... He showed several guns so modified and it was apparent that the muzzles of each were cut somewhat differently.......I too, have been very curious about experimenting with the concept.

As an aside, I have a Sarasqueta .16 double that is surprisingly accurate.....minute of milk jug.....to about 60 yards with Remington hollow Forster slugs. Shoots a bit tighter with Brenneke but I've never actually benched it for the purpose of deciding which is best.

I also have a Pedersoli double ML in .50 that will hold quite well to a hundred......My personally cast maxi balls print to point of aim with the left tube about one inch plus higher and left at that distance........I suspect with some experimentation I could eliminate the high side..........but hell, it's MORE than close enough for a hunting piece..................That load by the way is 90 FFG initiated with an RWS musket cap...Bullet is lubed with a combo of beeswax and crisco.

You are a man after my own heart! I have a friend who is a custom gun smith who built a rifled .20 GA SXS slug gun for a customer. I was fortunate enough to get to spend some time behind it during the regulation phase. What an incredibly cool gun! After we got it regulated for the desired slug and velocity, I was able to hit a milk jug every pull of either trigger at 150 yards. A gun like that would be the ultimate "shot gun" for big game hunting in a shot gun only zone. Heck it would make a fantastic walk around hog gun or anything else gun inside of about 100 to 150 yards depending on your skill and the quality of the regulation of the gun.

I'd absolutely love to have a good SXS slug gun.

I had a brain fart when I wrote the above message. For some reason I thought I was on the blackpowder forum. PRBs in a regular SxS????? Duh!

I only have muzzleloading SxS shotguns so please excuse my remarks.

Thanks H&H, looking forward to shooting it , I think? It's light so it may kick abit. I'm curious how far out it will go, it's regulated at fifty yards so not sure what the max range is. I'll be over joyed if, I can accurately shoot out to 100/125 yards. Where I hunt in IL I can only use slugs and I love the idea of a double gun. One day I hope to have a double rifle, but this will satisfy my itch for now.

Can someone tell me how to post up a pic or two?

If that doesn't answer your question send me a PM.

Well here the target with win slugs and brenneke. The sight has been adjust for elevation but the regulation is as good as any.
