Thinking about getting into blackpowder. I saw a T/C Omega, SS that looks good. Has anyone here had experience with them?

By the way, is it true that you have to clean a BP barrel around every 4 shots???

Thanks,
Steve

The Omega would make a VERY nice 1st muzzleloader for you!

My local FFL shop has sold a ton of that exact model this year alone... ZERO complains. Not one problem!

You don't have to clean every 3 to 4 shots if you use the "spit patch technique"…

Check it out: http://www.prbullet.com/acc.htm

While you’re there, check out the rest of what they have to offer & say.

I use their ammo in my custom T/C Encore… GREAT stuff!

I L-O-V-E my Omega, especially after seeing what it did to two deer this season. The first doe ran all of 20 yards, the second crumpled in her tracks. My Omega is a .50, stainless with black compsite stock. Sat in the rain three times this season, and the gun goes bang when you squeeze the trigger no matter what the weather. Using Hornady 300 grain SST's, with two 777 pellets, the gun is good for sub 1 inch groups to 100 yards, opening up just a little as the range stretches. I spit patch after every few shots, in the field or not, and haven't run into any hard loading problems as of yet.

Just curious - if the gun be used with three pellets, why only use two? Wouldn't the additional power be desired? Or, does the lighter load achieve better accuracy?

I actually ended up getting an Encore. The store had a camo version, with SS barrel. I held it... it felt good... my knees started getting that "gun" weakness... and... sigh... I guess it's better than gambling or drugs...

I've never done any BP shooting, but since getting this thing, I can't wait to try it. I spoke to a gunsmith at T/C about some options and while on the phone, mentioned I had bought some 777 pellets. He said, well if you're going to use those, you need to clean the barrel after EVERY shot. He said it fouls worse than Pyrodex. That's different than what the store told me... He said he only shoots FFg or something to that effect.

Thanks again,
Steve

my .45 omega gets about 1.5" groups at 100 yds with 150gr sabots and 150grs of goex clear-shot. if i played with the loads a little bit, i could get the groups size down a little bit more. i have to clean mine after each shot to get maximum accuracy. a little secret for initial cleaning; use windex with ammonia-D in your barrel and just pust a patch or two down the barrel to dry it out. it works great for cleaning on the range. just make sure you do a thorough cleaning when you get home.

cookhj,

What is goex clear-shot? Also, how do you apply the Windex? Do you spray it on a patch? How many times do you have to run the patch through it after each shot?

Thanks again,
Steve

goex clear-shot is just another blackpowder substitute. it's a little bit cleaner, a little less stinky and a little less smoky.

with the windex, i usually just pull out the breach plug, and spray a bunch down the barrel, spray off the breach plug, wipe off the plug, push two patches down the barrel, screw the plug back in and pop 1 or 2 209 primers to make sure it's clear.

Depending on how you go about it, you may have to clean every few shots.

I use natural lubes (tc bore butter, very important) and goex black powder with patched round balls, and I never have to clean. Ever. I clean at the end of the season before I store it and that's it. I've been doing this for years and have had no rust problems. I have found the ideal system for me.

Now, all these newfangled muzzleloaders, you're on you own, they seem to be a lot of hassle compared to my system but everyone's different.

Keep in mind guys… the process of cleaning (if your doing it right) the barrel out of plastic/sabot fowling will negate any natural bore butter applications.

I clean my muzzleloaders just like I do any other gun… I use Shooter’s Choice solvent & regular ‘ol oil for barrel protection. Doing that & using the “spit patch†technique gives me absolutely no problems. I’ve shot more then 50 rounds at the range before without a complete cleaning. The 50th round was as easy to load as the 1st round was.

(For information, I now shoot no more then 20 rounds before I stop & clean out the bore of the plastic buildup.)

Plastic fowling will eventually affect accuracy… natural cleaners (i.e. soap & water) don’t touch plastic fowling…….

Steve,

I am sure the T/C Encore is a great gun . I bought a T/C Omega .50 Stainless synthetic last year after they came out. I took one deer with it last year and four with it this year. Most of those deer feel in their tracks. I used the Cleansot powder in it last year and this year with great success. I also used Cleanshot powder in a Black Diamond I use to own and took six deer with it. I have never had any problems. That powder burns clean and I can shoot the gun several times without cleaning it. However it seemed like after about 4 shots the accuracy declined. This year I thought for the heck of it I would try some of the Triple 7 powder. I was extremely disapointed in that powder. After one shot I had to push with almost all my strength to get a bullet and sabot all the way down in the barrel. I cleaned it several times and still had the same problem. I looked down the barrel and I saw alot of fouling. This fowling was way worse than I had experienced with Cleanshot. Triple 7 is not for me. With cleanshot I could easly seat a sabot and bullet in the barrel even after 8 or 9 shots. Clean up is easy. Most of the time a little T/C number 13 solvent and a patch. It will clean it up easy with the first patch coming out just a gray color and not sooty black.
If you are not familar with Cleanshot it is a company out of Colorado. The best i can tell they have changed their name just recently to American pioneer(if I am wrong some of the other guys can correct me). I think they had to change their name and their pellets due to a legal battle they had with Hodgon. Good luck on your shooting and enjoy that smokepole.
