I'm looking into getting a "tactical" .308, something bolt action with a 20" bull barrel and I would like to be able to fit it with a McMillan A-2. My first impulse is a Remington 700 SPS Tactical, but I'm open to other options.
Does anyone have any opinions on the 700 SPS-T or suggestions for a different rifle?

Sorry, but it looks like the spr rifle I suggested is actually an a3 stock. Still a good deal none the less.

Saw a .308 tactical made by Moosberg today. Big 6x24 lighted mil dot scope mounted on a rail. Recoil reducer like a .50 barret out front but smaller. Black, short barrel, recoil pad, light weight all for $ 990. Have fun and bangaway.

Is there ANYTHING Mossberg isn't putting that silly muzzle break on? I mean for the M107, yeah it makes sense being a .50 and all, it really helps. However, when I see it on standard rifles, shotguns and even a freakin' .22LR, it is just silly and to me the clear sign of an amature!:barf:
Sorry for the thread highjack there but if it were me, I would go with a Remington 700, the FN that was already mentioned or a Winchester 70. Personally I went with a Remington VS in .308 that I got years ago. Over time, it went from the Simmon's 3-9X40 scope to a Leupold Vari-X III M1LR scope, from the H-S precision stock to a Choate Ultime Sniper stock (yes, that was a bukly, heavy mistake) to the McMillian A4 stock she wears now and from the knock-off Versa-pod to a real Parker-Hale bipod instead. That to me is one of the best things about a Remington is that you can build them any way you like and if you don't like the end results, you can always rebuild them another way until it's perfect for you and your needs.

What do you plan on using this rifle for? What kind of range? What's your upper price range?
Probably just a range toy, possibly hunting. I don't foresee making any shots past 4-500yds. I'm not looking to spend more than $8-900 on the rifle by itself, but I understand you get what you pay for.

If you are dead set on an A2 stock, take a look at the fnh spr.
That SPR looks interesting, so does their TSR. The A3 stock would work just fine I'm sure. Thanks for the link!

See my post on Rem 700 accuracy fixes. I see lots of guys go "tacticool" at the local range...they spend a bunch of bucks to buy something that looks like a precision rifle that they don't know how to shoot. Indeed, I have helped more than a few sight in their rifles as they don't know how. The sniper shows on the history channel are not optimal instructional videos.

A Rem is a good start...either their Tactical rifles (20" bbl) or Varmint (26" bbl). Save mod money and buy lots of ammo (I hand load, collecting new once-fired brass at the range very session...it keeps my shooting costs to <$0.30/round and my loads are more accurate than almost all factory loads). Acquire skills...performance comes from them, not the gun. As the Lone Ranger once said, "It ain't the arrows, Tonto."

You could pick up a 20" Howa 1500 supreme varmint .308 from CDNN for $399 and then swap out the stock for a McMillan A-2 ($500). Toss in an EGW 20 MOA base and a SWFA SS 10x42 scope and you will be G2G for ~$1300.

I'd go with the FN with the cheaper Hogue stock. Ditch the cheapo stock and get the stock I wanted. 2nd choice would be the Remington.
