I'm hoping to get a discussion going regarding these. As of this writing I prefer traditional full stocks with a standard or shortened length of pull. I watched the Gabe Suarez video and he favors the full stocks with pistol grips on the pump because A - it allows you to fire one handed at least once if need be and because it breeds familiarity between the shotgun, rifle and pistol and is a more positive feel and aids in weapon retention.

I'd be open to trying one of these, but the most important thing is that it doesn't detract from my speed in operating the weapon. I value speed more than anything in a shotgun, FOR ME. It's an instinctive weapon. Yes, you do have to be accurate like any other weapon, but you point rather than aim. The faster I can get a couple rounds of shot on target the better.

What are your experiences with them? I'd be using them on a Mossberg and it looks like the Speedfeeds sit quite a bit rear of the trigger and seem better suited to an 870. I have NBA point guard hands so operating the tang safety with a pistol grip of any kind of pistol grip is a non-issue for me as my thumb stretches easily. In particular for useage on PUMP shotguns.

I like them for tactical use anyway.

As well as the reasons mentioned I like how they make it easier to shoot around cover while minimizing your exposure, and also they make it easier to pull the gun back hard into your shoulder pocket.

I wouldn't want them on a Mossberg though, it just seems like the wrong setup there.

It seems like each and every product on the market has a few pros and a lot of cons. I'm surprised there aren't more manufacturers out there. I am looking at the Choate shortened LOP pistol grip stock on my 590. The Speedfeed goes much better on the 870 and ATI isn't a consideration. The Knoxx doesnt have a good enough cheekweld for me, and their new Talon thumbhole stock intrigues me but I want one without the recoil absorption feature. Reaching the tang safety isnt an issue for me. I can do it just fine because large fingers/thumb. They also make an oversized safety that could be an option. The John Masen is also an option though I'm unsure of it's quality.

I just wish I could try it all out before I bought it. I'm just kicking the idea around right now. I'm not one to put on tacticool junk just to do it, but I am always looking to improve the tool.

A buddy of mine got a Speedfeed pistol grip stock for his Mossberg 590. It looks cool, but at the range I was unimpressed. It just doesn't feel natural. I think it was a distinct disadvantage while breaking clays. Shotgun ergonomics have evolved over the years to give us naturally 'point-able' guns. The pistol grip stock seems to be a big step away from that. Also, on the Mossberg, it takes your thumb farther away from the tang safety.

Handled a pistol-stocked Mossberg in a pawnshop last Thursday. Felt entirely wrong - the stock was one of those with a finger space between the pistol grip and trigger guard, and I could barely get my trigger finger into the guard. As mentioned, it also renders the safety entirely useless without shifting your grip off the gun.

I'd like to try one on an 870, but on a Mossberg, never in a million years.

im pretty sure it was the Speedfeed you tried. It's entirely unsuited to the Mossberg. Makes me wonder why they didn't alter the design any for the specific gun. Kinda unprofessional for a big company in my opinion.

I'm mainly looking at the youth pistol grip full stocks by Choate, if anything at all.

This is honestly the first time I've been tempted to give one of these stock types a chance. Kinda frivolous because if it isn't broke don't fix, and the case of the grass being greener on the other side...but there's always What If?

I've never shot with one. I'd like to. I have my eye on that Choate stock. Everything else seems mismatched or has too many drawbacks for the application. I don't need the recoil reduction of the Knoxx nor do I want the PowerPak to be relied on for a cheek weld. Their Talon thumbhole looks cool, but I don't want the added liability of the extra stuff going on for recoil reduction. I heard they can "jump the rail" and leave the stock hanging.

I like having a folding stock on mine. Gets small when you need to, and has the full stock with pistol grip as well. I would never fire it folded unless I had to, I'd much prefer to use the stock and aim. It's pretty quick to deploy, and as I said still provides you with the pistol grip/stock combo.

I forgot to mention that another advantage a pistol grip stock can give you is that if you run a short LOP one, you don't have to worry about getting a thumb in the eye as some might when running a short conventional stock.

I had an 870 police stock crack on me so I went with a Mesa conversion. The only drawback is the recoil. I understand that a recoil pad for this setup is now being made by limbsaver. I am using a Houge grip and a Magpull stock.
