So, I got this Iver Johnson back before I knew any better, and recently I started fixing and prettying it up. Refinished the stock, smoothed out some metal, and made the Ultimak rail fit (and they said it couldn't be done). Still need to take some power tools to the buttplate, too.

Now, two questions. This thing has had fairly frequent FTEs, so I'm thinking I should replace the extractor, ejector, the springs for those, or the entire bolt. So, which one will it be? What would be easier, cheaper, etc., or what should I look for on each part? Already have a bolt tool if that makes any difference.

Second, I'm thinking of pinning the rear sight down at, say, 50 yds. Anyone here done this or can give any advice on it?

Thanks TIMC, I'll probably get one of those.

The problem is the casing sometimes fails to clear the receiver, and then gets stuck between the bolt and chamber, so I'm guessing it's the ejector/spring that needs fixing.

That may not help anything. Again if you describe exactly what is happening ,what ammo you are using I may be able tohelp you

I'm using Aguila .30 Carbine. The spent casing is lodged parallel to the next round being loaded, as if it is pulled from the chamber, and then pushed up by the next round but never thrown out. It happened twice today, now that I think about it I should've taken a picture of it.

I'd start with springs all the way around first. It's probably time to do so, and may fix your problems for less money. If the ejection/extraction problems continue, try a new extractor along with the new springs. That should do it. Most ejectors don't get too worn.
