Im thinking about buying a synthetic modern rifle for both target shooting and maybe the occasional hunt even though i don't go often. I was thinking either a 700 SPS (a little high but still would consider buying it) or a savage 111F. I want something at around 300-350 dollars worth of gun. I want to outfit it with a decent but not too expensive scope at around 150 dollars. What products do you think would best suit my needs? Thanks.

Aren't both those 500-600 worth of gun? Please show/tell where you saw 'em for 300-350!

I am looking at the Stevens 200 made by Savage, comes in long- and short-action and is roughly $300 or less. Fits those criteria. It's a savage with no accutrigger but I haven't heard any complaints. Trigger's still adjustable and good. Stock is a bit ugly but what's paint for?

A brand new 700 SPS varmint at my local dicks sporting goods is 450 and i have seen a savage on sale used for around 340 once. I didn't inspect though.

A used scoped rifle for that kind of money. Don't discount used either. You really have to work at damaging a modern hunting rifle. Just remember that a synthetic stock will increase the felt recoil due to the lighter weight.

I saw a 375 synthetic ADL 30-06 today at the gunshow. I also saw a savage 110 in 270 for 245. Don't rule out cheap prices for these guns.

I actually could have gotten a savage in 7mm for 230 off a dude who offered me one in a sporting goods store when he saw me looking at the hunting rifles there, but it was the wrong caliber for me. I probably should have gotten his number, because it might have been worth it to have it rebarreled (maybe).

Rather than ruling out cheap prices, I'd like to rule out high prices :)
