For those who remember the thread I did about a month ago, (29 yr old holds a handgun for the first time...) well, tomorrow is her day at the range.

This particular anti is my ex-girlfriend. When she and I lived together, I couldn't even keep my .22lr rifle (not only my first gun, but my Dad's first gun as well) in the house. It lived with a friend of mine during that time. So, needless to say, her going to the range is a big deal. I thank Oleg for talking to her and giving her some sense. (They work together.)

I've been working with her over the last few weeks on gun safety, the 4 rules, etc... Tomorrow is the first time she and I can get together for a range trip. Tonight will be a re-cap of everything I've taught her and we'll do some dry firing excercises.

She'll start with .22 on both rifle and handgun. The rifle is my first gun, a Winchester .22lr bolt. The handgun is my P22. After that, we'll see about shooting my 9mm. The funny part is, she's seen my shotgun and wants to shoot it as well! I told her for that one, I'd prefer she watched me shoot it before she tries. Heck, with her short arms, she might not be able to bring the shotty up to her shoulder. :D

If anyone wants to come out and join, I'm taking her to the WMA in Cheatham County around 1:00PMish. I'll be the geek with a black hat and a short blonde. Come say, "Hello!" :)

Just thought I'd share how I'm helping the RKBA grow by 1 person at a time.

Tomorrow should be an interesting day.

Good luck in converting her. Keep it safe & fun and that's half the battle.

Darrin,

One person at time, 149,999,999 Americans to go (then the rest of the world). Thing is, if all the pro's could convince 1 anti apiece, what a wonderful world it would be.

The very best of luck to you 2,

David

Sounds like you are well pepared for the event. Enjoy.

Let us know how it goes.

She might enjoy the shotgun. My 12-year old boy (small for his age) went nuts for informal clays the first time he tried it. It was about his 3rd time shooting.

OTOH, the first time I took my wife shooting I made the cardinal mistake. Not enough instruction. Light shotgun, 12ga. hunting load. Standing straight up, stance 90 degrees from the barrel. The recoil wasn't that bad, but because of her stance it sat her right down on the ground. She remains supportive, and has gone out with me a few other times, but that's one I wish I could do over. Don't make that mistake.

Howcum every time we're 'converting an anti' it's a girl ?

(Cuz if it's a guy, a quick drubbing in the back room would suffice ?) :D

As someone who has taken over a few dozen anti's and newbies:

#1) DOUBLE UP ON THE HEARING!!

I cannot stress this enough!! plugs + muffs!!!! Spend the 50 cents and get plugs too! She'll thank you... really!!

#2) Go over the gun in DETAIL.

Information combats fear.

#3) Start with .22's.

You got that covered. Good.

Have fun! Good luck. One at a time, is the start way to do it.

Well, we didn't make it today. :(

About 10 miles from the range, my shifting cable (manual transmission) came loose and left me without 1st and 2nd gear. :cuss: So we headed to a friend of mine's house to look at my car. FWIW, a clip came off and my car now has a coat hanger holding the cable in place. :fire:

Range trip will happen next weekend. The really funny part? She was totally bummed about not shooting! :D

Anywho, I'm going to bed. What a day.

Your luck it's just a clip! I had a throttle cable break on the side of a mountain once. Talk about ruining your day!

David

..... you might be a redneck.
Not quite the first time I've been called that. ;)

I've already gotten an email from her making me promise to take her next weekend. As excited as she is, you'd think she'd already been shooting and purchased her own gun!

Tune in next week for another exciting episode of "Converting the Anti."

Same gun time,

Same gun channel.

Now, a tease is something I have not been called before! :)

Well, made it to the range today. Now my friend doesn't understand why she hasn't shot a gun until now.

Time was against us, though. She only shot about 300 rounds from my P22. Then about 14 rounds from my .40 cal. (The .40 was her giggle gun of the day. Didn't hit anything, but smiled ear to ear from the recoil.) We never got the rifle (.22lr) out. :(

I did get my 12 gauge out while she was plinking. Her eyes lit up as she said, "I want to shoot that." I loaded up one round, *BOOM*, and the shotgun was handed back to me. I asked if she wanted to shoot it again and she said, "Yeah, but more than just one round." So I loaded the tube with 5 shots. After the 2nd shot, she was rubbing her shoulder and handing me the shotgun back. "Ok, I've had enough of that." (She didn't tell me until later that she was about in tears because she held it wrong. :D )

All in all, a good afternoon. She's very excited about going again.

Hey all you anti's: :neener: I just took another one away from you all!

300 rounds from your .22? That's more than just a sense of obligation, or curiosity. That's real interest!

Remember my post about my wife and the 12 ga? Shoulda given here a bit more instruction on form...

Looks like very positive results, all in all.

I was actually thinking about that today!

I was trying to get her to lean forward before shooting. She admitted later that she was too preoccupied with the fact that she was going to shoot a 12 gauge, she didn't hear a thing I was saying. After she took the 3rd shot and held back the tears, she said next time she listen to what I have to say. :D

She stopped at about 300 rounds only because we had to leave. I took 2 bricks 'just in case.'

Good show Darrin. Trick I use is to have a target frame so I can put a nice big target up close. Get them use to seeing hits and as their groups shrink in size, the target starts creeping back (during target change of course).

I took a Anti to the range years ago , he was a Navy Medic in Viet Nam and swore he'd never own a gun .
When he heard I had a SKS he lit up ! .." ...We used them when our 16's failed ...."he said.
Well thats all it took , now he owns 2 rifles and 4 handguns.

I have to ask the obvious question: What changed her mind ?
I don't have any experience with this. How does someone go from being so afraid of guns that she can't even have one in the house to being all excited to shoot anything and everything you bring to the range ?
Was it the self defense aspect ? Curiosity ?

444, I think when she and I broke up, we both gave serious thought as to why our relationship died. One thing she realized was how upset I got when she started her "I hate all guns" mumbo jumbo.

It also helped that she works at the same place as Oleg. (That was pure luck on my part.) She learned from Oleg that guns themselves are not evil, just the person behind the gun. (Not every person, but, oh hell, you know what I mean.)

As we started working on our friendship again, I'd tell her about going to the range. One day, she asked to see my guns and held them. Next thing I know, she's suppose to go to the range with Oleg. Oleg then backed out saying he thought I should take her for her first trip.

IME, especially at work, I'll let some known anti's get to know me. Once they see I'm an ok person, then I ease into the conversation how I went shooting the previous weekend. After the look of, " :what:, you own guns?!" they see I'm still the same old me and that nothing has changed just because now they know I like to shoot.

My ex was accually telling me on the way back from the range, "I wish I knew why I hated guns all this time. I guess it's because I didn't know anything about them. Thanks for teaching me." Some people have to convert themselves, I guess. *shrugs*

I've often thought of putting a sign out in my front lawn.
