Tuesday (3-8) my wife and I happen to have the majority of the day off together while the kids where in school (a rare thing). She wanted to go and do something, the first thing she said was go shopping. My response was where and for what. Well she didn’t really have an answer, so I suggested we go to the range. I knew what her answer would be because she fears guns, says there is too much power in them. Well I won her over by telling her she needs to learn to harness that power and use it for her and he children’s protection. I also laid on a little guilt by reminder her that I don't have many hobbies and shoting is one of them but she never goes with me.

After loading up the range stuff and my guns, which consist of a Steyr S40, Steyr S9, and a Marlin semi-auto .22, and then taking her to buy some new makeup we headed to the range.

The first thing did was get out the range’s interactive targets whilel she unloaded the range bag. I thought she would think them more fun then punching paper.

I showed her how to load the Marlin and then shot it a few time to show her that it wasn’t that load and then handed it to her. Once I realized she was closing the wrong eye when she was aiming the little lady was quit deadly with it.

After going through a couple of tubes we moved on to the pistols. I loaded up a mag of 9mm and then showed her how to handle the gun safely and how it operates. We walked out onto the range showed how to hold the gun and to stand, pointed to first big metal silhouette and said fire when ready, and dern if she didn’t hit it right between the eyes. The S9’s recoil didn’t bother her too much and after the second mag she was used to it. The only time she would miss big was when she would start using the wrong eye again (she sees a little better out of her left eye, but it still comes out to 20/20 vision since the LASIK surgery, she was legally blind). After about 40 rounds she had all she wanted, but I had noticed a big difference in her demeanor. She was a lot more relaxed on the last magazine she fired off then she was the first.

Long story short- ignorance breeds fear, knowledge is power.
I feel a lot more confidant now that if she had to use a pistol she could.

Now I just need to get a .22 pistol for her to shoot

Good for both of you!

She has cross-eye dominance. Search here and in the handgun forum for tips.

Convince her that buying ammo is the same and buying makeup.

Sounds like the same scenario when I took my wife out for the first time. But I had to stop on the way home and buy her "own" gun. Been a lot of fun ever since.

Good luck to both of you. Safe shooting!

She can shoot well with cross eye dominance, I do it. She just needs to adjust her stance a bit.
Along these same lines, I had my gun with me last night when I stopped in on my mother. She was worried when I told her I was buying one. I was sitting on her couch, reading Gun & Ammo, and she asked to see my gun. I showed her how to open the cylinder (Ruger Service Six) and confirm that is empty. Showed her how to hold it, aim it, etc. She has arthritis in her hands pretty bad, so she has a hard time pulling the heavy double action trigger, and supporting the weight of the gun. I think I'm going to get a Ruger Single Six in .22lr for "me" and show her how to shoot that one. She can pull the hammer back with her thumb no problem, and should be able to handle the recoil of a .22lr better than a .357 mag or .38 spl. I'm looking forward to getting her out shooting with me, and maybe even getting her something for herself.

I bought the S9 so that I could shoot a little cheaper than what I do with the S40 and to use it as a house gun. The idea behind it being a house gun was to have something that she could shoot too. I knew she could shoot a 9mm because I talked he into shooting my Ruger P89 (she pulled the trigger twice and thin high-tailed it insided) when we lived out in the country. So essentially the S9 is her gun untill she wants something she picked out herself. She has mentioned that it would be neat to have a pink gun for here to use. I wonder what a Kahr would look like in pink? :D

I was kinda seeing a girl in school who "loved to shoot." But, my ex and I got back together, and she was super I don't want you having a gun around me, yada yada yada. Well, this time around, she hasn't mentioned it once. I am hoping there is hope. I gotta get her with a "women can't shoot as good as men" and see if I can get her to fall for it. I doubt it though.

Flashpoint,

I know someone who's got a purple Kahr (purple anodizing on the metal, I mean). Not quite my cup of tea, but she loves it. :D

Flashpoint... Like Pax I've seen purple guns... I think one was a kimber and the other a glock (okay so it hurt me to see)... but the woman who owned the gun loved it and so did most of the other people who saw it. Cross eyed dominance is a pain in my butt... I used to shoot right handed but I am left eyed dominant. I finally gave in and put an ambi safety on my HK and now spend my time shooting left or right handed. I can pretty much shoot equally well with both and carry my gun either way depending on how I wake up in the morning.

Dasmi... you are by far a braver person then I am. I have told my parents that I go shooting with friends but not that I have a gun. They know I have a concealed carry permit, but for some reason I don't have the nerve or the courage to tell them that I have a gun. I can't see that going over too well, since my parents are pacifists... sooo fustrating :banghead:

My wife and I don't fight very much and for the most parts they could be classified as heated debates, but one of the biggest fights we have had in our 10 years of marriage was when I actually wanted to by a handgun to go along with my CCW.

So you can see how big of a step in was getting her to go to the range and actually shoot a gun more than once.

Good for you and your wife.

You have more patience than I do. I would of dumped my wife as soon as I found out she don't like guns.
