Yesterday Frances (my wife) and I took a friend of ours shooting for her first time and all of us had a blast. Previously she had never even touched a firearm. She knew we shot and had been asking questions over the course of a few months and had briefly handled my Walther P99c on a few occasions just to ease her into the idea of holding a pistol and cover some basic safety rules.

We went over to their house early (her boyfriend has fired when he was younger, and went with us a few weeks ago) and let her get familiar with the pistol she'd be firing, a Taurus PT25, went back over basic gun/range safety and let her know what to expect when we got to the range. We also showed her some of the other firearms we'd have their in case she wanted to try those.

All in all we had myself, Frances, Frances' dad, Dan and Sara (new shooter) at the range and we had the Taurus PT25, Beretta 92FS, a Beretta CX4 Storm (.40cal), 2 AR15s, a bolt action .243 and a lever action .45-70.

Sara started off slow, firing a single shot from the Taurus a few times before working up to a full magazine. After a while she decided she wanted to try the 92FS. She fired a few shots but still wasn't comfortable enough to really enjoy it so we went back to the Taurus. She also decided she would try a few of the rifles and went through about 10 rounds with the CX4 and a few from the AR.

At the end of the range session everyone had a lot of fun, especially Sara and who knows, we might get her out to the range again sometime for some more fun.

You know you're creating monsters, don't ya:D I'm trying to get my case manager into shooting myself. She's not anti-gun but she's afraid of what the recoil is like.

Nice, looks like fun. If only I could ever bring anyone to the range .. *sigh* .. See, in New York you cant even put your hands on a handgun without a permit. Which is absolutely horrible, because very few non shooters are willing to go through the costly and lengthy process of getting a permit ( at least $100 and 4-6 months of waiting ) just to try something out.
Poor me, always have to go to the range alone .. *sigh*

I have found a 22 / 22mag is an excellent rifle to introduce long guns to new shooters. Alot of new shooters are afraid of the noise and recoil. Now of course hearing protection is a must but still one step at a time removes certain fears.

Pretty much the same in this case...not anti-gun, but never exposed to them before. She was also worried about the recoil because of her Fibro and some other ailments that make her joints weak. That was the main problem with the rifles, they were to heavy for her and put to much strain on the joints in her arms.

Danurve, I do have a .22 pump action rifle at the house but forgot to bring it. I honestly didn't think she'd want to try a rifle at all (she seemed more comfortable with the idea of firing a handgun) but when she wanted to try the Beretta and AR, we went for it. And yeah, I let her use my electronic Petors so she would have an easier time hearing direction when I gave it to her, etc..

I'm going to start my case manager off with my KWA Beretta M93R airsoft gun. This should boost her confidence a bit without getting her scared. Once I explained how recoil worked she seemed more acceptable to the idea.

Excellent.

New shooters are the lifeblood of the RKBA.

Agreed, I always let my friends know that whenever they want to go give it a try I'll be more then happy to take them. I have a guy at work who I've been talking about taking, and as soon as his schedule clears up we'll be heading to the range.
