My brother, my dad, and I took my girlfriend to the range last night. My dad rented an 9mm Glock and I brought my brother's mossberg in .22 and my marlin model 60. My girlfriend and I got to the range early so we sat out in the car and reviewed the 4 rules and all that. I was happy to discover that she already knew them!

So we went in and rented a few lanes. Now, she's a clean freak...borderline OCD sometimes. So she had me loading the guns so she wouldn't get lead on her fingers. Let's just say she had so much fun by the end of the night that she ended up loading them herself. That's a huge break through for her. I showed her the basic operations of the gun and then let her fire a few rounds in the general direction of the targets to show her that the recoil was absolutely nothing. She had been nervous about it because the only gun she's ever handled was a $15 bb gun. I told her that the recoil was comparable to that haha.

After trying it, she discovered that her fears were unfounded. Once she was comfortable with how the gun works, I slapped one of those target stickers on the target so that she could see where her shots were hitting more easily. That's when she really started having fun. Turns out she's way better than I am. She likes my brothers Mossberg better than my Marlin because it's lighter and she's on the smaller side. She was getting ten out of ten rounds in really tight groups at about 20 yards (it was a 25 yard range).

Here's the kicker: we discovered, after she was almost done impressing us with her skill, that the rear sight was down the whole time! We put it up for her and she didn't like it so she put it back down!

She wants to get a .22 rifle with a scope now. My brother suggested a 10/22.

That's another one for our team.

Behold the power of the .22! I just found a Ruger 10/22 for $75...it's at the 'smiths right now getting a new firing pin, cant wait till I can take er home! :D

TheArchDuke; Excellent, way to go! Rimfires are great, imo one of the best guns to introduce somone to rifles with.

The accuracy (precision) of the 10/22 out of the box can at times be hit or miss. Mostly miss by the samples I've shot, but on occassion a hit as described by some folks (though I've yet to see this myself first hand). One trick some have used with good results id to remove the barrel band (on the models that have it).

One thing is for sure, though. Getting the 10/22 to shoot very tiny groups is very easy to do with aftermarket parts.

Good to hear of your positive day at the range.

weird how some people can shoot accurately without sights.if id not seen it happen several times before my eyes id not belive it.

i think its one of those skills you have built in you as i and others i know have tryd to do it and failed consistantly.

It could be argued that we all have the innate ability to do this, at least from the shoulder, and we have hampered that ability by being taught to use rifle type sights.

I know when I was learning to shoot skeet, a big breakthrough for me was learning to keep both eyes open, concentrate on the target and ignore the bead and barrel of my gun. How could you hit a moving a target without measuring the lead with the bead? Believe me, you can and it works like magic when you learn to focus on the bird and trust your mount.

TheArchDuke, I enjoyed your post. Good deal! It is always nice to see someone enjoy what we do and it is not just a man-activity. Never saw any hair growing on my Mossberg 22 rifle. Honestly though, the 10/22 is an okay rifle as I have one of the walnut stocked "deluxe" versions with a 4x scope. I shoot my Remington 541S when I want serious accuracy. Really like that rifle. Mossberg shoots darn good too!
