I am taking the NRA Pistol Instructor course in December followed by the Personal Protection in the Home (PPITH) course. My goal is to teach new shooters how to properly handle handguns and be safe-minded in the process.

The NRA course instructor has also recommended that I take the Rifle Instructor course in October, which I will certainly do; however, I haven't shot a rifle in quite some time and need to brush up my skills first. I don't even own a rifle at this time...my only shoulder-fired weapon is my Remy 870 shotgun. For those that have taken the Rifle Instructor course, do you recommend that I buy a used 22LR or 223 bolt-action on the cheap to practice? It's hard to come by rifle rentals at the nearby ranges. Most rifles on the rental market are AR-15's at $$$$. By the time I shelled out the dollars on these rentals, I probably could have bought a used bolt-action rifle.

Any recommendations from those that have taken this course? Best rifle to get the job done? Thanks in advance.

A good .22 rifle will do just fine to tweak your marksmanship skills. IMHO, stay away from semiautos for your purpose, a nice bolt gun like a CZ will do much better for you, makes you slow down and aim instead of giving in to the temptation to spray and pray. :D

Thanks, JNYORK. I do like CZ pistols so I can imagine that their rifles are quite good, too. Another good thing about taking the rifle instructor course before the pistol one is that I would receive my basic instructor quals early and will shorten the class time for the pistol course.

Thanks to those that responded via PM on this. Your feeback on the qualification process was very helpful!
