Talk me into or out of a KEL-TEC SU-16A

steve-

The law is the law.

The gun is legally available in California.

Same goes for AR-15 lowers that come from the same factory. It's the name stamped on them that matters, not the factory of origin.

Kasler vs. Lockyer -- read all about it.:)

Thing is, most dealers would rather sell you a $1000 blind-magazine plastic Bushmaster or a $1500 California FAL, so nobody was in a hurry to stock the Saiga here.

Check out Calguns.net

I got a SU that give me NO problems. Fun and light.

for 5.56 cartridge, I prefer the off-list AR platform with MonsterMan Grip and no "evil" PC12276.1 features - so I can drop my preban mags.

I much prefer my LRB M14SA 7.62x51 Steel goes plunk instead of plink

Talk me into or out of a KEL-TEC SU-16A

-Your reasononing for buying the gun is altruistically compromised by intrinsic flaws in your psychoanalitical process ergo you deficiently comprehend the ultimate impulse which has motivated the positive response visa vi complicating the complex reasoning process carried out throughout the various cortexs and lobes which maintain and operate your basic desires, fundamentally flawing your choice to buy a Kel-Tec SU-16A. :neener:

p.s. i didn't mean for this to make any sense.

If you have money to spend (IOW this isn't 500 bucks you've saved up for two years and won't be able to afford again for at least another year), then I do suggest you get the Kel Tec SU 16 CA while they are cheap right now (I paid 525 which was a bargain, now ddsranch is selling for 475!). They are excellent guns for their purpose (lightweight, foldable, accurate). I have one and it is quite a permanent part of my home.

However, if this 500 really is your hard saved over two years money, then i would suggest that you get either a ruger mini14 580 series (very important that it be 580 series) or a saiga 5.56/7.62x39 from RAA (very important it be RAA, the kalashnikov one is illegal).

they are not foldable nor light, but they are acceptably light, acceptably accurate (neither as much as an su16), but above all tough to break as nails.

you will not be able to use your grandfathered 20 or 30 ar15 mags with either of these two, hwoever. as you live in ca you will also be limited to 5 or 10 round magazines for either.

silverlance, with all due respect, you're recommending an SU-16CA, but are picky about the Mini being a 580?

Yeah, the 580 is more accurate out of the box than the older Ranch Rifle without modification, but I'm just sayin':p

I've been pretty impressed by the 580 ruger series. I never thought I'd be but I have been.

The SU-16 CA is very accuarte (surprisingly so actually) but you can't thwack someone upside the noggin with it as well as with the ruger.

I'm not sure what you mean by :p . are you suggesting that the su16 isn't accurate? because it is - very much so, about as accurate as my ar15 ever was.

my only gripe with the su16 is that the grip is too big for my little hands.

Well... how about an M1 carbine? My buddy is debating between an M1 a CA Su-16... both very handy rifles.

The M1 is not quite as powerful, but still respectable... it's very light and probably will last longer than the Su-16... though it's already pretty damn old. Both are about equal in price. .223 is far easier to obtain than .30 carbine.

What else?

that last is very important. .223 is dirt cheap and easy to get in shtf.

30 carbine is not. nor is 30 car equal to 223 in range, accuracy, or velocity.

i would say that given a choice between a limitless supply of 30 carbine and an m1, or an equally limitless supply of 223 and an su16, i would without hesitation take the m1.

unfortunately, that is not the world i live in.
