I'm in the market for a pair of pump action 12 gauge shotguns, but on a limited budget of $600.
What I'd like them to have:
at least 6 round capacity
20" or under barrel
full stock
$200 or under/gun shipped and transferred

So far the gun that best fits the bill is the Maverick 88, 20" 8 round. These will be pretty much a matched set of his & hers home defense/truck gun/fun range toys. I can get 2 for around $400 shipped, and have about 200 left to buy ammo/slings/lights and maybe fiber optic sights. So, is this a good choice? Any other suggestions?

Between your necessary criteria and price range I'd say you already made up your mind on the Mavericks. I shot a Maverick for the first time this week. While I still like my 870 better the Maverick is a shooter and I like that it holds a couple more shells than the 870. I'd say go for it. Take that extra $200 and practice practice practice.

Quick question: Why 2 short barrelled guns?

One for me, one for my fiancée. Better zombie defense as a team, right?
We tend to buy pairs of guns together to have fewer calibers to buy for, and platform familiarity among other reasons. 1911s, P3ATs, both have .22 pistols, and now it is time for shotguns.

Why go el cheapo on shotguns and high dollar on the rest of the arsenal? Just wondering!!

RIA 1911's are cheap. Kel-Tec's are cheap. Going pretty much low budget through the whole arsenal. I just don't see a need to spend big money on a gun. If I was in a position to buy high dollar guns, I probably still wouldn't.

$600 limit? Get two 870's. Or two Mosberg 500's combo guns. 88's are ok. They're not the best out there by far, but not the worst either. They'll hold up. But an 870 just feels so much more solid than a Maverick 88.
