Search engine on this sight isnt working for me so sorry if this has been beat to death.

Found one in 40, 2 mags and red dot used for $200.00.

Not real familiar with a 40 cal but I think its bigger than a 9 and smaller than a 45.

Should be fun to shoot.

Also found an SKS for 2 but not sure of the condition. Just looking for a neat inexpensive gun.

Leaning towrds the High Point.

If you're just looking for a fun/cheap plinking rifle in a pistol-caliber carbine, the Hi Point isn't a bad choice. I'd consider the 9mm version over the .40 S&W though -- 9mm ammo should be noticeably cheaper and easier to find. Also, if I recall correctly, the Hi Point was running about $179 new w/ red-dot a year or two ago. I don't know for sure, but $200/used sounds a little steep.

$200 is probably OK for an SKS if it's in nice condition. Again, prices seem to have gone up a bit since the last time I looked (around 2 years ago). I recall seeing unissued SKS's for about $150 at that time. The 7.62x39 cartridge is going to be a little more expensive than the pistol-caliber cartridges. And you won't be able to shoot it at most pistol ranges.

IMO, given your choices the Hi Point is slightly better for a cheap plinking rifle. Preferably 9mm if you can find it.

It depends on what you plan on doing and what you already have.

The Hi Point in 9mm is preferred over the .40 IMO only because ammo is cheaper, more plentiful and it has a larger aftermarket following. The 9mm is weaker than the 7.62x39 and doesn't have the long range ballistics of it, but who cares. Its not in the same class and they don't even compete. The 9mm or .40 is fine for plinking, HD and medium game out to 75-100 yards. Mine can pull a 1" 10 shot group at 50 yards with open sights.

The SKS has the battle rifle feel, fires a more powerful round, has greater distance and a much larger aftermarket following. It also has greater recoil and report.

I own a 995 and will probably get an SKS sooner than later. Different tools for different jobs.

I'm gonna get the High Point for now and just for fun.
No real need just a cool inexpensive gun.
Now I'm going back and fourth on the 9 or 40.

IMO if you're getting the Hi Point for cheap fun, then it only makes sense to get the 9mm version. That will let you shoot cheaply as well.

I've got the 40, 40s were all the shop had when I went looking last fall, NIB with tax, 4 spare mags it ran me $290 OTD,

it's a pretty decent shooter, pop cans at 50yards is the norm with a 170gr LSWC over reddot.

I've got the 9mm version, for ammo compatibility. If I had .40 handgun, I'd have gotten the .40 version.

Mine has been flawless for over a year. I have no problem popping cans at 50-75 yards with it. It has eaten everything I've fed it, from WWB 115gr FMJ to a box of Hornaday TAP 124gr HP and lots of others in between.

I jsut picked one up a couple of weeks ago, running price at the gunshow was 220$, I think I got mine for 240$ OTD with the laser. I havent shot it yet and debating on the ATI stock.

hi points are awesome plinker's! though 200 may be a little high. i got a 9mm with 2 mags used for 150. and have seen new 40's for about 175. and i live in MA where everything is more expensive.

they are super reliable, will eat anything you feed it, and are backed by an awesome warranty. not a 5 year warenty, not an original owner warenty, not a lifetime warranty. flat out support. is it a Hi Point?- Yes. ok its covered!

After doing a bit of research I believe 150 or less is more like it for a used one. Found a 9 and a 40. Both guys want 200. I will see if they will come down. If not, I'll get a NIB for around 200ish.
Think I'll go with the 40 cause I've never had a 40 anything. Not significantly more expensive to shoot after checking prices on Midway.

I have the.40 and it is a great weapon. When I first got it the trigger was a little stiff so I took it to a local gunsmith and now it is great. I have a 2x power red dot scope on it and it is extremely accurate I have been able to get a 5 inch group at 100 yards using a bench rest. The only complaint I have is that there is virtually now hi-cap mags out for it if you are lucky you might be able to get a 15 round mag. I paid $ 199 for mine new with 1 mag so if you can get the weapon with 2 mags and a red dot sight I would say go for it I have no regrets with this weapon
