My wife has wanted a Luger for a while. She'd like one to shoot but wants a Nazi marked gun. I don't know much about Lugers so help me out. She doesn't care if it's rare so what is the most common type (lowest cost) and reasonable price for a good condition gun?

I bought one last year that was made in 1941. It has a moderate amount of wear and a very slight amount of pitting in the barrel, but still shoots very accurately. All serial numbers are matching, except for the magazine, but it's rare to find a magazine with a matching serial number. It also has, of course, the Nazi waffenamt stamps on the frame and barrel. I paid $1100 for it, which is a decent price for such a Luger in this condition, though not a bargain.

Lugers

If you don't care about matching numbers, you can get a perfectly good mis-matched WWII luger for around $700. Also there are quite a few lugers that were nickel plated by returning GI's. These have little collectors value, are less expensive, but shoot just fine. Check gunbroker.com there are always a good number on there. If you really want fun luger to shoot, get an artillery luger. A shooter will run about $1100, but you can actually hit something with them. Be aware though, that they are WWI lugers.

I came across an all matching 1920 police Luger at a small gun shop for $695 about 2 years ago. It has about 70% finish, but still looks really good and is amazingly accurate. I don't know very much about the Nazi marked guns, but if you shop around, you can still find nice Lugers for under $1,000.

The last time I checked a guy by the name of Robert Hall in Dayton, TX had 3 or 4 mis-matched Lugers for about $600 and up. If I can find his card I'll get you a phone# for him. His shop is called Bodon Inc.

If a price around $1,000 doesn't scare you off, you'll be able to find a gun that your wife likes. Lugers are surprisingly accurate, despite the lousy sights. And there are few guns that feel so right in the hand. Good hunting!
