I own two Kel-Tec P-40's and am quite impressed with them. If you have one that you've given up on, try a few of these suggestions.

1) Don't use 180 grain ammo. My best ammo choices are 135 grain Hydrashok, 135 grain Cor Bon, and 155 grain Gold Dot. The Hydrashoks are the easiest to shoot, and feel very similar to shooting a 9mm P-11 with Win Value ammo. I'm now using the Cor Bons for carry and 165 grain Win Value for practice.

2) Check your mags. There are two editions of the P-40 mags. The older one has a mag release slot on both sides. The newer ones only have one mag release slot on the right side. You want the newer one. Return it to Kel-Tec for an exchange if you have the older one because the mag lip cutouts are different.

3) Don't buy the +1 finger rest extension. The appeal of having 10 rounds is not worth the aggravation of having the first round jam low into the feed ramp. It will cause dangerous bullet setback. If you want a finger rest buy the one made for the P-11. You won't get the extra round, but you will still have a functioning mag. The +1 extension was not designed large enough to fit the extra round properly. When the first round strips off it will be pushed out of the mag at a downward angle. This will cause it to impact hard on the feed ramp, or even miss the feed ramp low, hitting the frame. If your +1 extension works I'm happy for you. I have three that are useless.

4) There is another common mag problem. The last two rounds will quite often feed so that they wind up sticking straight up, jamming between the slide and the barrel. The problem here is the follower and the way it rests on the mag spring as it comes from the factory. In an attempt to cure the low first round feeding problem the mags ship with half of the top mag spring coil bent upward at a 45 degree angle. You will see it immediately when you take out the spring. Flattening out this angle will in most cases stop the last two rounds from coming out straight up. A better solution is to buy Wolff replacement mag springs. They do not have this upward bend, and the extra power will help you get more reliable feeding. BTW, I have never had a malfunction using P-11 mags in the P-40. You only get 8 round capacity, but the follower in the P-11 has those long legs (to make it 10 round capacity instead of 12) attached to it that assures you that the round will always strip off at a perfect angle. I've tested them with several hundred rounds.

5) Polish the feed ramp. Some older Kel-Tec barrels have very rough machining marks on them, sort of like a washboard when you look at them closely. Some 600 grit sandpaper will polish out the rough spots.

6) Use some type of grip sleeve like the Hogue Handall Jr., which I have on both of mine. A good grip is essential to proper functioning. The finger rest extension also helps.

I have both of my P-40's working perfectly now, and they are both extremely accurate for me out to 21 feet, which is fine for self defense. The last time I checked, Kel-Tec still has some .357 SIG barrels for about $129.00. The Kel-Tec hard chrome slide exchange is still available for $20.00. I exchanged both of my slides for hard chrome. I also have the ungrooved trigger shoes installed.

Here's a pic from when I still had the +1 finger extension. I'm using the P-11 finger rest now.

Best regards, Keys

I almost got a P40 Friday. But it was $250 and looked really used and abused. I thought it was a little too high for me. I will get one eventually though when I find one for the right price so I'll have all of Kel Tec's Ps.

Nice report Keys

Nice analysis Keys. I have a P-11 and a second pistol with both the .40 conversion and the .357 Sig and love them both. It isn't the prettiest pistol in town and doesn't have the best trigger, but both of mine have been picture perfect each time I've pulled the trigger. Same for my P-32.

And they are light and concealable.

And, on the other hand, my Smith 4013TSW has always worked perfectly, right out of the box, with all ammo, all mags, and no mods required.

Why would you accept a pistol with that many problems? Do you drive a Yugo too? ;)

A note on Kel-Tec customer service. I just today received a replacement P-40 mag for an older one I sent them. KT part # P40-36. Turnaround time was six days.

My P-40's are rocking along just fine, and I will be happy to discuss any technical issues with anyone wanting to get their P-40 tuned into a reliable shooter. It is true that the P-40 has been pulled from production, but there are still a lot of them out there.

Regards, Keys

Same story different day. many Keltecs dont work otb, Guy's over at KTOG rave that this is somehow acceptable because of the price. I too have delt with Keltecs customer-service, they were great. However, they should probably take half that energy and devote it to the products going out the door instead of the ones coming back in.:what:

It would be foolish to buy a gun based upon price. Size and weight were the deciding factors in buying my P-11 and P-40's. My P-11 loaded 10+1 is 22 ounces, and so is the P-40 loaded 9+1 (on the wife's fancy kitchen scale, and she caught me doing it :uhoh: ). I have proven the reliability of my Kel-Tecs through extensive range testing.

My Kel-Tecs are my pocket guns. When I'm out in my car all over town working I carry a S&W .357 in my portfolio. Be prepared - it's the KeysBear motto. I just hate to see a gun being used as a paper weight when it could be a reliable shooter by changing out the mags or the springs. I hope I've helped some people with this thread. Your mileage may vary.

Sorry I offended you, Keysbear -- I was just poking fun. That's why I put a smiley at the end.

No offense intended.

enfield,
Just wanted to know your intentions so I sent you the PM. Glad they were friendly. :)

Now, let's have a range report from today:

P-40 with Wolff 22 lb. recoil springs and Wolff mag springs.
2 mags 9+1 135 grain Cor Bon JHP: No malfunctions, medium felt recoil, not unpleasant.

1 mag 9+1 155 grain Gold Dot JHP: No malfunctions, greater felt recoil, almost unpleasant.

All three mags on pictured target at 12 feet. Not my best day at the range, and not my worst.

Also shot four mags 10+1 with +1 extension of FMJ Winchester Value 165 grain on another target. No malfunctions with FMJ. Very manageable recoil. For me the 22 lb. recoil springs make the P-40 very pleasant to shoot. Again, your mileage may vary.

As usual the guy in the lane next to me wanted to know what pistol I was shooting. I think a lot of people want a good compact pistol in .40 S&W. I've heard rumors that Kel-Tec is going to bring back a P-40 next year. Maybe they'll do it up right out of the box this time.

Best regards to all, Keys

Hmmm...

Because we have a presence at KTOG, that somehow qualifies us as glassy-eyed Kel-Tec zombies who know NOTHING about quality and only do business with the Mothership.

NOT!!!!!!!

I bought a P-11 after MUCH research. In fact, a Taurus P-111 HAD been my first choice, but the simpler, more elegant design of the KT and the certainty that IF I should have a problem I couldn't take care of (despite being mechanically challenged), their 'smiths WOULD make it right...and THEN some in the form of extra goodies sent my way.

Never had a problem with my P11, so I bought my wife a P32.
Sent it back for the Hard Chrome upgrade, and they sent an extra magazine back when they finished.

Bought myself a P32, a real beater. Sent it in and without my asking, they rebuilt it, by that I mean literally stamped a new frame with my old ser# and all internal parts were new as well when I got it back.

So the stories are true! A HECK of a company, and a heck of a gun!

...wait....the Mothership is calling me....must...return...to the Hive.

No; not all KTOGers are ZOmbies; just quit a few:D I'm sure Key's posted a KelTec Bash over there and now yer here, away from the mothership. I only own one personally; my wife carries it and likes it. However, it didnt work out of the box. Many THR members have had similar experiances, do a search, check it out! Lets see how many more of you show up to Flame now. Run Home and Tell the Brood.:D

keederdag,
Thanks for your concern regarding flames, but I find that the P-40 has very little muzzle flash. I did experience some excessive flash with Win SXT 180 grain ammo, which told me that something about the round wasn't right for the short barrel length, and as I understand it was causing excessive burn outside of the chamber. That can cause turbulence behind and around the bullet affecting accuracy. Therefore if you're seeing excessive flames coming from your gun you should consider a different round.

Now, if you're seeing excessive flames about your gun? :D Oh well, like I said, I'm just here trying to help. No posts at KTOG from me - go look for yourself - it's a ghost town.

I did get a good dose of the Kel-Tec knuckle buster today where it rubs all of the skin off of the knuckle at the base of your thumb on the back of your hand. The P-40 is a real challenge to hold onto with those Gold Dots.

Best regards, Keys
