So, apparently cap guns aren't real PC anymore. I cannot seem to find anyone that sells 'em or roll caps now days. Sorta makes the tap o cap worthless. I was at the Dollar General, one of those dollar store chains, we have two of 'em, looking for roll caps. They didn't have any, but they had these "ring caps". I've never messed with 'em, was too old to play with cap guns when they came out in the 70s or 80s, can't remember which. They are little blanks, in effect. I pulled the plastic body apart and I'll be danged if they didn't look just like a cap, just cut 'em off the little ring. I tried one on one of my Hawkens and it's slipped right over the nipple and when I fired it, DANG, it went "pow" with the authority of about a non-magnum percussion cap! Two advantages, I can get 'em in this little town, don't have to drive 30 miles to the nearest gun shop and, 2, they're 192 shots for a buck 75. I doubt they'll have enough pop for the hawkens firing pyrodex or triple 7 which needs the magnum primers to have any sort of reliability. BUT, I sometimes pull the nipple off and dump a little pyrodex in the hole, screw the nipple back, and that insures ignition. I bet they'd fire that way. AND, the tap o caps are pretty reliable on my revolvers. These have more pop than 3 roll cap centers in a tap o cap for sure. And, you don't need the tap o cap body, just cut off the caps from the ring!

Some of you may already know this, but I feel like I found gold. ROFL!

I read about it here a year ago or so and tried it for myself and they work on my Pietta Remington. They're really snug and you have to be careful seating them.

They just remodeled one of our Walmart stores, I don't know if they still sell cap guns, but the one on the other side of town still does. I bought several packs of them before I got a Tap-O-Cap kit. I've had good luck with even the Chinese caps. I don't know if they re-wrote the instruction sheet, but mine says to use 3 caps. I've got a mix of German caps and Chinese, the Chinese work if you use 3 of them. It's really labor intensive and requires dexterity to make them, but they're for FHTI times, anyway. I first used those plastic caps 20 years ago.
They lite pyrodex just fine and have a snug water proof fit.
Only one downside, if your gun doesn't fire, the plastic gets mashed onto the rim of nipple quite well and it takes a pin or very pointed knife to get it off.
A nipple prick is to flexible to do the job.
I could never get them to work on my revolvers though, only rifles.

Hole Punch

Im looking for a new hole punch to use for my Tap o Cap the one I have is to large I would like to find a 3/16 paper punch any Ideas ?

Hole punch came with my tap o cap. I'm not sure you can buy one like it without getting another tap o cap, but it wasn't that expensive as I recall. Might try an office supply store.

Thanks for the link. Buying caps off the net is a little against the whole idea of being able to get 'em down the street at Walmart in that "FHTI" situation, but at least I know I can get 'em and I don't guess there's a haz mat charge for 'em which is an advantage.

Not meaning to give UPS any ideas, but how come there's no Hazmat for capgun caps, but there's hazmat for caps and primers since they pose the same risks?

Hmm, thought there would be. I have ordered caps from Dixie 30 years ago, but not in recent years. Well, that's good to know, too. I'd like to, though, find a local source of roll caps. I mean, some years back, every walmart carried 'em so if you could get to a walmart, you could have caps.

I'm really getting into these "ring caps", though. I popped one off my 51 navy a bit a go. DAMN, I shoulda put my hearing protection on! Things are HOT compared to tap o caps with three roll cap centers. AND, 192 of 'em for a buck seventy five ain't shabby! Not all the prep of using a tap o cap, either. I'm really happy with this find and look forward to actually trying them out at the range next visit. I might run buy out the dollar store if they work fine. :D Don't see why they wouldn't the way they pop in an open cylinder. They fit tight, too, no need to pinch the caps.

Ring caps

I have tried the ring caps for some of the same reasons you have mentioned they work ok in my rifles but only so so in the revolvers and if you get a misfire you need to dig the plastic out of the nipple im going to try to take the cap part out of the ring cap and try that the funny part the container i put the cut apart ring caps in have the inserts lose from handling them
