Target backer board

Our club uses 1/2" OSB plywood as backing for our targets on both the rifle and pistol ranges(Supports are made of 2x4's and don't get hit that often). The 10 yard pistol backing is torn up within a week of being put on. We normally change them out once a month.
Does anyone know of a material or combination of materials that will do a better job without draining our wallets?

Cut a hole out of the center of the backer board a little smaller than the paper targets.

I use cardboard on the plywood after the center is gone. Works for me ; )

Use 1/4" OSB. It's cheaper than 1/2" and gets destroyed at exactly the same rate.

One of the (nicer) ranges that I belong to uses some type of fabric. It's really thin, you can see through it. Self stick targets will stick to it for a while, some use clips on it. I'm goimg there Saturday, I'll see what it is exactly.

I expect the target frames to be garbage wherever I go.

I take a big roll of "kraft paper" and staple gun with me every time I go to the range.

Some folks will blow the bejeezus out of the target frames, no matter what you use.

our range uses Celotex, much cheaper than OSB and more durable and NO SPLINTERS.

x2 on chickenwire. I use 3 different ranges with it. It holds up pretty well, is fairly cheap, and can be replaced in minutes.

I use those political campaign signs, look like plastic cardboard.
There are always plenty left after an election.

yeah...i could never quite understand that.........i mean, i can understand an accidental hit here and there.......but i swear, its like people are intentionally trying to hit them......is their aim really that bad?

i mean, im not the greatest shot.......but i can at least keep it on the paper at 75 feet.....

That's brilliant. Every now and then I hear an idea that is so simple that I'm amazed I've not run across it before. Using chicken wire, or something similar, just makes too much sense.

I use cardboard. Some is stapled to wood framed plywood sheeting and some is hung from smaller metal frames. I like the support that a well mounted piece of cardboard gives the target (nice clean holes).

Kind of off-topic, but I just started using 1 1/2" strips of conveyer belt to hang steel with and have reached the conclusion that it's the ultimate way to hang steel. Off-center hits aren't as violent and the target steadies way faster.

One range I go to does not have backer boards, just metal posts with 2x4s running horizontally at the top and bottom.

The targets themselves are placed on cardboard which is suspended from the 2x4s. The targets are usually low enough on the backer board that the 2x4s are fairly safe.

My club uses black fiber insulation board. Not sure on price.

I should remember to bring a chunk of cardboard so no matter how shot up the backer is, I can secure a good pinning surface.

Tip, shot targets you are not proud of make good backers also.

I go through lots of big cut up cardboard boxes, which then become excellent compost.

One place where I shoot has 2 wires strung between uprights, wires about 36 inches apart, and targets are hung from the top wire with clips and attached to the lower wire with clips. Works fine.

approx 24x30" slides into an angle iron frame, sometimes blows out.
someone in the club has access to the circular paper graphs used for recording temperature, there are usually a bunch of those in the range shed.
Foamcore is good.
