i was wondering what options i have for building up or buying a tactical accurate bolt action that would be used for competition in the future and prefrebly built off a model 700 but at a resonable price($600-$900). i keep looking at the model 700 police but i dont know much about it or if there is a better option. if someone could enlighten me, that would be great, also i know verry little about optics but i hear super sniper scopes are awesome.

My PSS in .300 win mag with an IOR 10x56 shooting 190 grain federal gold medal will print consistent .55 MOA out of the box @ 100 yards measured by caliper.

If you didnt know what that meant, maybe a precision rifle isnt for you.

colt.45,

Well, you can buy a Remington 700P or Winchester Stealth for about $700 and learn long range tactical shooting by shooting the barrel out. At that point you can drop about $1500 into it for a custom barrel and other goodies, but there is no cheap way to get where you want to be. Good scopes alone start at the $600-$900 you are talking about.

A standard Remington 700 will do what you want.

You can upgrade it later.

I can shoot about 1 1/2" at 200 yards on a good day with a Remington 700PSS or a 700LTR. I prefer the LTR; makes a handy "do anything" rifle with the 20" fluted barrel. I use mine for deer also, with the bipod removed. The PSS is just too heavy to carry around all day. I assume you're looking to spend the $700-$900 on just the rifle from your post, and either of these will fall right in the middle of that range.

I have Leupold 3.5-10 Tactical scopes on mine, on one piece bases (Leupold or Redfield) and low rings, with Harris low bench rest bipods.

no, i got it all

please dont take me for a little kid i am not youre average 14 year old shooter. when i get the money i will probably get the standard 700P or the 700TLR with a harris bipod and a supersniper SS10x42 scope. i have shot the 700TLR and i really liked it, not so sure about the scope but right now the supersniper fits the bill.

You might also want to look at the standard Remington (OK, I'm a Remington kinda guy) 700VS. It's basically the same rifle as the 700P for about $200 or so less money. The stock is a little different, without as wide a beavertail on the forend. I have a friend that has one that will shoot with my 700PSS all day long. It has the 26" unfluted barrel. If you're shooting from a bench or fixed position, it's the way to go; if you're planning on using it for hunting or packing it around on a sling, I still like the lightweight version much more.

If, by competition, you mean long range, don't get the LTR.
The short barrel won't let you make the most out of the powder you burn.

I'll second USSR's post.

Savage 10FP (less money, just as accurate, gun snobs hate you)

Super Sniper 10x mil-dot (less money, just as accurate, scope snobs hate you)

Unless you've got unlimited funds or just HAVE to have "the best," you can put the two together with a pack (bipods suck) and a better stock than the factory Savage, and shoot wee little groups at a long ways for just barely a grand.

Once you master range estimation, wind calls, breath control, trigger control, and natural point of aim, then you MAY be able to shoot better than that combo.

Once I get all those things down, as well as load development, I will trade in my well beat Savage and have a TRG-42 in .338 Lapua Mag with a USO scope...my precioussss.

well i got time

i probably wont have the money for a year, all of these are fine rifles and i am leaning toward the 700vls. untill then i will practice my ass off with my new garand, i am a pretty good shot but i have a long road ahead of me. i have triger squeze and breathing down and right now im working on npoa, but im pretty bad at range estimation. what are wind calls?

Yes. Learning to shoot on a Garand is a good start. Too many people go straight for the scope and don't bother to learn how to shoot with service rifle sights. Shooting with service rifle sights (ie: M1, M14, M16) is a great way to develop the basic rifleman skills.

Wind calling is basically the skill of calling the direction and speed of wind. Learning to call wind is as much art as science. Lots of factors when reading wind.

Get the Jim Owens books on wind, sight alignment, and leather sling / shooting positions. Good reading. Good advice.

my brother and i were looking into the same thing you are. he's already ordered his, and i order mine next month. we opted for the heavy barrel howa/legacy rifles. after talking to some owners of those rifles, they are damn accurate, and decently priced. you can buy the barreled action and put a bell and carlson kevlar composite stock on it to get that sendero kevlar look.

freds guide to being a rifleman

when my dad bought the M-1 garand from my grandpa he also gave me a pretty thick packet entitled "freds guide to being a rifleman" it is my new bible. the first thing it discusses is npoa and then it covers everything else you could imagine about rifle shooting, even political views. also one thing i am doing now is strengthening my shooting muscles, ill put a sandbag or two on top of my airgun whenever i shoot it. if yall want a copy for kids or whatever i might be able to make a word document or something.:)

This made me laugh till my nose bled, and only cause its true. I am a remington snob, and I chose an IOR 10x56 over the super sniper 10x.

But, most likely I would be perfectly happy with the rig you describe.

I'd personally stray away from Howa's. I haven't had good experience with the two I owned. Sold them immediately.

I agree with the above, take a look at my Savage, the second post in this thread:

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=171805

It cost as follows, Savage 12FV .308 $439.00, Super Sniper 10x $299.00,Rings and base $50.00, a can of Krylon for the stock, and a home made cheek piece, the whole thing about $800.00 bucks, and boy oh boy does it shoot!

I have another 12FV in .223 that shoots just as well, maybe even better.
