OK, went to a Lynyrd Skynyrd and Cheap Trick concert tonight. Great show (except for Saturday Night Special, but that didn't keep me from enjoying it). Anyhow, I noticed that the officers that carried bothe their duty pistol and a taser weapon, had the Taser simply shoved muzzle down in their back pocket.

Is that common, or even safe? I would think it would take one drunk to walk up behind them and pull the trigger (or even grab the weapon) for that practice to stop.

And yes, the cops did have their work cut out for them tonight. Honestly thought the lady behind me was getting arrested (or tasered, the second officer had his hand on the weapon through the entire encounter).

As far as back pocket carry, I wouldn't find that to be safe at all, for purposes of accidental discharge, rentention, or it simply falling out of the pocket.

Officers that carry Tasers where I live carry them in a holster on their duty belts, usually in a cross-draw position somewhere between 9- and 11-o-clock.

Tasers are available to the public. We got rid of all of ours, due to pantywaists wetting themselves over the thought of an inamte relative lawsuit if one dies. 11 dead over 3 years - get rid of the Tasers.

The new X model Tasers are carried on a duty belt in cross draw fashion. The older style Tasers are carried weak side in a thight holster.

Anyone know "the rules" for private ownership and carry of the Taser as a Less-Than-Lethal weapon?
I guess it would vary depending on your state or locality's laws regarding what constitues a "Prohibited Offensive Weapon". Outside of that, I would imagine some type of training/certification in its use.

However, they are kind of bulky and odd-designed. I don't know if I'd even want to carry it. OC takes up less space on a "civilian" belt (or even can be slipped into a pocket).

Do what you will I guess. I'm not one to judge another for what they feel makes them safer.

Breathing the wrong way isn't legal here in MA. :neener:

Can't wait to be out of here in a year, going to CT. Not perfect, but better.

As to the intellect level of carrying a taser in the back pocket... if we're talking the new LEO one, it has a good safety. Still have to flip that off to fire, so it's safe enough.

Not saying I'd do it, just that it isn't too unsafe.
