Just purchased a Taurus 1911b 45acp. Really like the gun, it shoots well with multiple ammo types. I know that a lot of people seem to enjoy bashing Taurus, but I have not found anything to complain about. i own a number of handuns both revolver and semi auto. This is my 1st 1911 and I am very happy with it. I have about 250 rounds through it so far, and the only thing I am planning on changing is the sights. For some reason the Heinie sights just don't seem to get it for me. I am thinking of something in a big dot or hi viz fiber optic. Any suggestions from other owners?
Thanks

The Taurus uses a proprietary sight cut. AFAIK, only Dawson makes a sight that'll fit.

I must be the only one who loves the Heinie sights! To me, in defense you're only going to use the front sight anyway.

I enjoy the snot out of mine. I bought it for a great price, and spent a fair amount of time researching what I wanted and got it all in one package. The first range session I had some problems with failure to feed, it does not like speer gold dot ammo, but I learned that it will eat any fmj ammo I can get my hands on. It is an accurate, reliable, and consistent pistol to shoot.

I've got a PT-1911, and three of my brothers have them. All have been trouble-free through many, many rounds. Mine has three-dot sights - also have a PT-145 that has the Heinie sights. Don't really care for them either.

Absolutely my most favorite 45ACP. I have the PT1911 with the light weight frame and load my own cast bullets. It's displayed in this pic with a Carbon Fiber Bladetech holster. Nary a hiccup with this baby and has eaten everything I feed her.

Dang, I wish I would have known that before I put the Hi-Viz sights on mine. lol
I have both the 45acp and 9mm Taurus PT1911's. I do have Hi-Viz sights on the 45acp and like them a lot. Both guns have been great so far.

I've got one that's presently my USPSA Single Stack gun. Used to be my CCW primary, as well, before I shifted to a lightweight gun for that. It's one of the first year production, and had a few issues at first, (lock in hammer died, grip safety broke, and had one of most rust prone finishes I've ever seen on a gun.). I also didn't like the sights.

It now wears Dawson fiber optic sights, an S+A mag well, and has been melonited. The series 80-esque parts are gone, and it's using an 18 lb Wolff recoil spring, in place of the too light stock one.

My only remaining gripe is that the ambi safety is a little floppier than I care for. That's next on the list, when I get another case of upgrade-itis.

So, after the grip safety broke and you had it fixed, it rusted too bad and had to be refinished. You replaced the sights. The hammer lock failed. Then the only thing left to do is replace the ambi safety because its looser than it should be.

Doesnt sound like such a great gun to me.

My stainless PT1911 came with 3-dot Novaks, which I much prefer to the Heinies. About 400 or so rounds through and no problems at all. Totally reliable and dead-on accurate too. I wasn't prepared to like it as much as I do....

I own a stainless one. Has never eaten a factory round, only my handloads, with an absurd degree of accuracy. Easily able to shoot 1 inch groups offhand at 10 meters. Love mine, and have NEVER had any kind of malfunction with it!

It isn't great, it's good. I guess I didn't mention its virtues, though. It's surprisingly accurate for a factory gun, and feeds reliably with any sort of bullet shape, SWCs, hollow points, etc. Since its shakedown period that first few months, it's been pretty much trouble free for seven years and 25k-30k rounds. Not that shabby for a $450 gun. ( Edited to correct: $450 1911. Modern plastic pistols at that price point probably have fewer teething troubles)

Now all that said, it's still not an STI Trojan. Knowing what I do now, if I were buying a Single Stack competition gun today, that's what I'd get. However, the younger me who bought the Taurus couldn't afford a $1500 race gun. Even now, it's good enough that when I took up Single Stack, I decided I'd get more bang for my buck by slapping some Dawson's on my old carry gun, and spending the rest on ammo and match fees than by springing for the STI.

I have 2 of them. I shoot single stack with the ss/rail and usually beat the more expensive guns if I do my part. The other is the blued model that has a Marvel 22 conversion on it for practice. They shoot just as good as my Kimber, actually better because the Kimber is a little finicky about ammo. I installed a set of truglo tfo sights on the comp gun. I couldn't stand the heinie sights either.

Thanks for the feedback. Another question. What modiifications will invalidate the Taurus warranty? I'm thinking of wood grips and new sights.
Thanks again

I have had my Taurus 1911 for 3 years, maybe 5,000 rounds thru it, 90% of them light hand loads (800fps) Shoots like a dream, other 1911 owners that shoot it are very impressed. I am going to buy another one (stainless) as soon as as I can find one.

I have owned one for several years and I'm a fan. Never a minutes problem. I've run 180 gr. LSWC to 230 gr. JHP with never a hiccup. It compares very favorably with my Colt Series 70 Gold Cup National Match except in the sight department. Not really anything wrong with it's sights. I just prefer adjustable target sights like the Colt has even though I can occasionally shoot slightly better groups with the Taurus.

I had a PT 1911 pretty early on (cost me $359 NIB). Always a good, reliable shooter, and it was my first 1911. It was also part of the trade that got me into a great DW 1911. I kind of wish I had found another way to buy that DW, and I'd love to find a PT 1911 in .38 Super.

Good Gun that a fair number of people want to crap on. Too bad for them.

I have a PT1911ALR. It has been flawless, no problems at all with it, maybe a few hundred rounds through it, all WWB IIRC.
Mine was supposed to have Heinie sights but didn't and from what I've read they aren't liked by quite a few people, so I'm ok with it.
Only thing I have done to it was swap out the ambi safety for traditional left side only. When carrying the gun holstered I was concerned about the safety getting swept off without me noticing.

Besides the Taurus I have 2 S&W .45acp revolvers, and a Sig P220 so I AM a fan of .45ACP, just never got the 1911 bug as so many do.
