got a taurus 1911 a few months ago,(new), slide is a little loose and doesnt lock back after mags inserted.(100 rounds through it).Any way to tighten up slide ? 8 rounds loaded into mags it is vey tight to insert mags denting top round.best mags to buy ? any suggestions? other than tradeing off or trashing it?

Well to start with the pistol was designed to hold 7, not 8 rounds in the magazine. That might be where part of the trouble is. :scrutiny:

A ledge on the magazine follower is supposed to engage the lug on the slide stop after the last round is fired. Field strip the pistol and then put back the slide stop. Insert a one-round loaded magazine and then push out the cartridge and you can see what the slide stop and magazine follower are doing. At this point you might have a clue, but I would start with a quality 7-round magazine.

A slightly loose slide shouldn't affect the way the slide is locked back. A gunsmith can tighten it, but you will probably find it to be expensive, and it can reduce the reliability of the pistol if it isn't done right. Replacing the magazine (and slide stop if necessary) would likely cost far less.

yes according to website and the mags themselves it should accept 8 rounds
it really must be the mags not having enough upward force to engage the lug.guess i'll buy a new mag. weird that both mags would fail.

It could also be a short lug on the slide stop, or the slide stop may be working its way out of the frame to the left. Always define the problem before you try to solve it. But in any case I would buy a new magazine.

My Taurus has no problem holding 8 rounds in the mag. I carry mine 8+1 all the time and have never had a problem. Is the mag that you are having problems with a factory mag or an aftermarket? If it's a factory mag that's not functioning right, I'd give Taurus a call and see if they can send you another mag or fix the one you have.

I've had np problem with my PT1911 8 rounders. I use Colt or genuine GI mags with no problem.

Old Fuff is right. 1911 mags were originally designed and intended to hold 7 rounds in that space. Some 8 rounders work just fine, but sometimes it causes problems as well.
