I just visited a gun shop and saw a Taurus 617 revolver. It's a 7-shot, .357 magnum, 2" barrel weapon. The shop wants $450 out the door. Thanks for you inputs.

I picked up one like new for 300 a couple years ago & love it. Smooth trigger and has functioned flawlessly so far. I read all the bad press about Taurus, but my experiences have been good. I don't shoot a lot, but I'm very satisfied with it.

I bought the 617T titanium version many years ago. It was a joy to carry and I'm amazed how thin it is for a 7 rnd cylinder, Mine, however was ammo sensitive and I couldn't depend on it. The heavier blue steel model may not have these problems. Taurus also makes an 817 lightweight model in 38spl.

I'm no expert in SD but from what I've learned, a ported barrel, if that's the model, is not such a good idea, especially in close quarters, your face may be right over the top of the gun. Muzzle flash in the dark is also likely to be more than less.

Not ported!

Thanks for the feedback so far. It is not ported, and is stainless steel. Yes, the trigger on this one feels "enjoyable" - judging from the slight pull I used on it.

I've had one for years. It's one of my favorite Carry Guns. I had a Tritium Sight installed up front and I installed Houge Grips . The DAO trigger is so smooth you would think it had a Trigger Job. It is very easy to shoot accurate. I carry it IWB with Federal Classic 125G. 357 Ammo.

Benzene, I've had a 617 2" two or three years now. During that time I've put 2,500 - 3,000 rounds of assorted 38 special +p, +P+, and .357 Magnum ammo through it without a problem. It's not a high end Smith but never did I pay a high end price either. For what it is I've been quite pleased, but I will not buy another Taurus firearm. The reason is Taurus, makes two kinds of handguns, either ones that will give years of good service at a fair price, or weapons that will never be right no matter how many times it is returned to the warranty center.

If you do get the 617 I hope you get a good one and it gives you years of good service.

Picked it up today!

Okay, I picked it up today. The tirgger feels "perfect" out of the box. The fit and finish is quite acceptable. I hope to pipe a box of 158 g .38 Special LSWC +P and a box of full house .357 magnums.
