Taurus Autopistol Durability

I recently traded in a Taurus PT99 that I had for 17 years and had well over 10,000 rounds through it. It was very reliable and accurate. The only problem that I had was when I was firing some reloads and one had been double charged and made a big boom and blew out a pin on the side of the pistol. I hit it with a hammer (I was an armorer in the Army!) and it popped right back in. I never had another failure with that pistol. I hated trading it, but I carry an XD 45 and traded the Taurus for an XD 9 for cheaper practice. I still have several Taurus handguns and trust them completely.

My semi-auto and revolver from Taurus both had issues even months after I bought them with only a few hundred rounds through them.

I will never buy Taurus again. The parts on it and in it are very cheap aswell.

Save up your money and buy a good gun such as a Glock.

Care to elaborate? It would be more helpful to those of us who look for patterns of problems in certain models/product lines.

I think the 1911 version will prove better than the other semi-autos. You have to get a 1911 right, or you'll really sink the ship. And the Taurus 1911 really looks right. As far as the others, I'd avoid any in .40 caliber. That round tends to punish a pistol more than others due to the higher pressures, slide velocity. 9mm or .45 would be my choice. There are other gun makes that handle the .40 better. But who knows with this 24/7. I don't have much experience with them, so they could be better than I think. In the meantime, I'd spend a bit more cash and get an XD or something.

At what's approaching $600 each they'd better. I was reluctant to buy one at $500. The price has been inching up over the past few months. At $600, I might as well spend the extra $80 or so and get a Kimber.

Taurus IS the major firearms supplier for a MAJOR country-Brazil. This includes SMG'S etc. I have a feeling that if they were used by our military the PERCEPTION of quality would go up.

Amazing what good marketing will do! (Remember the Hs2000/XD thing?)

I've only put a total of about 1000 rnds through my Tauruses- but no problems yet.

Can't say that for Marlin, Ruger and a few other US companies that are rarely criticized.

I've got in the neighborhood of a 1.000 rounds thru a PT111 Millinium Pro that I bought used from an LE. I don't particularly like the trigger travel, but the sucker has yet to hiccup & it fulfills the purpose of BUG just fine.

Well, I guess we'll find out

Clearly, there's not enough first-hand material on this pistol.

I guess I'll just have to get my own.

Oh, and the distributor still has a handful of these.

So no need to get jealous.

:D
