I recently purchase a Taurus PT709 Slim for my wife for Mother's Day. This will be "her" first gun. She researched it out and handled several firearms at the local sporting goods store and she chose it.

I just got it this weekend and wanted to clean it and put a couple hundred rounds through it before giving it to her.

The gun has a very long trigger pull. The trigger is almost all the way at the back of the trigger guard before firing.

The trigger recet is very short. I think it is too short. Twice in 100 rounds it fired two rounds when only pulling the trigger once:what:.

It grouped well (about 3 inches low) at about 15 yards. With the adjustable sights I should be able to dial it in.

The recoil was not terrible, but it did tend to move in my hand a little bit while shooting which required minor adjustment between rounds.

There were no failures of any kind in the 100 rounds fired.

The gun has many feature I like, namely, manual safety, double strike capability, slim design, adjustable sights, and most importantly it was the one my wife likes.

The only thing that bothers me is the two involuntary "double taps".

Has anyone else with this gun experienced this?

It fired the two rounds so fast, that my friends at the range didn't even notice it.

I think the two things are related and the trouble is based on what you are used to shooting rather than a problem with the gun.

The super-long trigger travel is due to the design, more specifically due to the previous design. This action design was originally from the Millennium series, which were double action only pistols. To make them DA/SA, a sear was introduced which catches the firing pin/striker when the slide cycles. In SA mode, the trigger bar simply presses back (with no resistance until reaching the sear since the striker isn't being pushed back) to the sear and causes it to release the striker, rather than the trigger bar pushing back the striker and then releasing it. I've probably not described it well but if you field strip the gun and pull the trigger you'll see what I mean. When shooting the gun in SA mode you're pulling the trigger bar back and then just moving the sear, in DA mode the trigger bar is pulling the firing pin back the same distance and then releasing it.

Anyway, it's an unusual trigger if you aren't used to it and can easily cause double pulls since it's not expected to have so little resistance and travel, not to mention how little reset it has.

Thanks for the response.

So you think this is normal?

I understand what you mean about how the trigger works and I had read in the reviews before I bought it that it has a very long trigger pull, but I had not heard anything about the short reset.

I know short reset is desireable, but this really just caught me off guard.

I have had no accidental double taps with mine. That's really strange. To me the trigger pull is a little long, but so light in the first 3/4 I don't really even feel it. Mine has been flawless as well. Mine also shot way low and to the left, after adjusting the sights it's a tack driver.

I have a 709 with well over a 1000 rounds through it. The reset on my gun is pretty short, but I've never had an unintended double tap as a result of it. That said, it doesn't take much to fire a follow up round after the first shot. If you're getting this kind of performance without doing it on purpose, you might want to consider calling Taurus customer service to see what they say. Make sure you tell them you think it's a safety concern - it might improve your chances that they'll send you a UPS/FedEx label to ship it back. Your situation sounds like an accident waiting to happen.
