Hi guys,
I am considering a new pistol. I am a police officer and already own a Glock 22 RTF, which I love. I want a reasonably cheap 9mm to just shoot for fun. I have looked at the Taurus PT92. It looks good and fits like a Berretta. Is it accurate and does it perform well? I look forward to your responses and would be interested in other pistols as well. I have a budget of 400 or less.

Thank you,
Dale Gann

Unfortunately I have only handled a few, but they fit me well, and look pretty nice too. I hope to pick one up also :p

If you want adjustable sights, look at the pt99 also.

I like my Taurus PT92 better than my Beretta 92. The 1911-like frame mounted thumb safety makes all the difference for me, I ended up hating DA/SA operation, but the PT92 also has a decocker so you have that option if you prefer.

My only negative was I had to break my 1911 shoot with the thumb on the safety habit as the Taurus decocker activates by pushing down past "off safe" and can decock under recoil if your thumb rides the safety.

Best gun Taurus makes by far, and a fantastic bargain at current prices. Academy has them on sale in todays paper for $299, they are easy to find for ~$350 elsewhere.

they are an excellent buy

Beretta had a military contract in Brazil that mandated that they build them in-country...when the contract ended, Beretta sold the factory to Taurus. so the PT92 was built on Beretta machinery for the original 92...they just changed the mag rerlease from the butt to behind the trigger guard.

depending on the age, you might be able to use Beretta mags

And moved the safety from the slide to the frame.

the Beretta 92's thumb safety was already located on the frame...just like the Taurus

they changed it when they produced the "F" model, at the same time they changed the location of the mag release...for the M9 competition

I have one & love it. Accurate, reliable, soft shooting. You can't go wrong with that choice. For the same money I would consider a few others; I REALLY like shooting my CZ 85, quite a bit more than the Taurus. Slightly more accurate, far better ergos IMO, a little heavier makes for lightning fast follow-ups. It is also a little more trim & slim if you ever do decide to carry it. I carry my CZ frequently; I have never carried the Taurus concealed.

For open carry or range use, the Taurus is tough to beat.

I had the adjustable sight version (PT99) for many years. It was reliable and reasonably accurate.

Figures, no Academy near me..... :(

I own one and I've never had any issues with it of which to speak. It has good ergos (for me) is accurate and has never failed to feed, fire or extract. The only change I made to mine was replacing the factory plastic grips with a set of rubber Hogues.

The Berettas made for the Brazilian Army/Navy/Air Force were the Model 92. The mag release was down on the left grip bottom-corner and the safety was on the frame just like a 1911. When Taurus took over the plant, they changed one thing only - they added a hook to the trigger-guard. About a year or two later, Taurus then moved the magazine release to be behind the trigger guard after manufacturing 60-80,000 pistols with the lower magazine release. Until that point, the Taurus and Beretta models 92 were fully interchangable. Soon afterward, Beretta developed the 92S that had a decocking lever/safety set into the slide. Then during the US Pistol tests in 1978 Beretta also moved the magazine release up behind the trigger, calling that the model 92S-1. Now, at this point, not all parts are interchangable anymore.

But, I own an original Beretta 92 and a Taurus 92 and these two pistols are fully interchangable.

...then go with the Beretta. Really, I'm not a Taurus basher, I have a revolver from them, and a pt145 that I love, but looking at the m9 and the pt92 is no contest for quality.

Also, I'd suggest looking at the 96 chambered in a .40 IMO.

Same machines means nothing without the right materials and know how.

Many consider the PT92 to be one of, if not THE, best in the Taurus lineup. I bought mine back in the 80's when they were a lot less expensive than the Beretta 92 (like $300 less at the time). Nary a problem, more accurate than my eyes allow, I prefer the frame mounted safety, C&L carry. Like the Beretta 92, it is a bigish gun for a 9mm methinks.

When it comes to Taurus, there's a lot of naysayers who have had issues w/ Taurus QC and customer service... so do be aware of that. (I cannot blame someone who's had negative experiences from warning others) But again, I've never had a problem with any of my Taurus products... yet, and I've got a couple three or four.

Other good 9mm's that come to mind and might be close to your price point include CZ75 (and clones thereof) and Rugers (P89/95, SR9). Don't overlook the older 3rd gen S&W 9mms as well (39XX series, 59XX series, 69XX series, 908, 910, 915 = cheap but good) which can sometimes be found at a price point lower than their real value (they're sleepers I tell ya!)
