I've read about people putting the Tracker's ribber grips on the 617, are all the Tracker grips the same? Reason I ask is that I just bought a 617 and I want wood grips for it, Hogue lists them for the Tracker but not the 617 specifically...

The tracker is a compact frame, not a small medium or large frame. The compact frame is like a Ruger SP or a super redhawk in the grip area, meaning the whole thing is covered by the grip front and back strap. ITs shaped like a railroad spike and unfinished.

The 617 is like a smith frame IIRC finished front and back strap. Hogue does make wood grips for these.

Hogue only makes a rubber grip for the tracker series guns they dont make a wood grip for it, I have one and I know becuase I wanted a wood grip for my .45 tracker and could only find a Nills grip in wood, they are made in Germany and cost $130 to $150 and require a 3 to 6 month order lead time with payment up front.

I just ordered some Hogue rubber grips for my 817 (tracker frame) and I hope I like them better than the "ribber" ones. The "ribber" ones are just too bulky feeling, and I just don't like them. What I don't know is if the Hogues are smaller/more compact than the ones Taurus offers with the finger grooves, anyone know?

I was just hoping for a smaller, more compact grip, seeing how it only has a 2 inch barrel. Would have like to seen it come with a two-finger grip.

Thanks guys, Bob79 for what it's worth, I put the rubber Hogue finger groove grips on my Taurus 608 and they are ALOT slimmer than the factory rubber grips, changed the feel of the gun totally, it's one of my favorites now because it "fits" me better....

I love the ribber grips on my Taurus Ti Tracker! Why do some rubber grip manufacturers bother making a rubber grip to absorb recoil, and STILL allow some of the frame to make contact with the hand? It makes no sense!

Helloooww?! Could someone at least try to answer my question? This really puzzles me. I also have a S&W M66PC (with rubber grips), and the Taurus is much more comfortable to shoot.

Alot of people agree (myself included) that it's not the back of the grip that makes the most of the difference, control comes from a proper fit on the front of the grip, the back covered in rubber helps yes, but not as much as a proper "fit" to your hand ...Thats one reason a really well fitting set of wood grips does a good job of taming recoil...

I believe the backstrap is left open, and the metal exposed to cut down on the size of the grips. Like how most J-frames from S&W come like this with "boot" grips, for max concealability.

I would have preferred grips like this on my 817, the frame is about the size of SP101, but weights only 21 ozs and has a 2" barrel. The 817 would be better served with a two-finger, smaller grip. I know some like the ability to have your pinky on the grip and the backstrap covered, but it would be nice if Taurus gave the option of "either/or".

But I got my Hogues, and they are better than the "ribber" grips in my opinion as they feel better, and are a little more compact.

Here ya go...
