i don't own any revolvers :(

Is the titanium version of the .357 tracker with the 4" barrel just too light to control with anything heavier than medium velocity personal defence rounds? Is the steel version just a better all around gun?

Please no taurus bashing.

I have a Taurus titanium M617 in 357, with a 2" ported barrel. The gun shoots well and recoil, when firing full-power 125 grain loadings, is pretty easy to control (thanks to the porting and ribber grips). The 4" titanium tracker should be even better recoil-wise, especially if ported (haven't fired one of them, though).

I have had a Stainless Steel version in 6.5 in and it was a great gun, traded it for a Marlin 1894c, that is more practical and gets shot more.

I still have a 4" 45 Long Colt and it is also a great gun and handles very well. The ribber grips absorb a lot of recoil impulse.

The titanium one seems to be just as well put together but I wanted steel.

I think steel is always better unless you need the lightweight for a specific carry purpose like pocket or ankle carry. Everything else can be done right with good belt and holster with steel. Steel is going to be a more pleasant shooter. Steel is also going to be more reliable. Titanium and steel expand at different rates. You can get a bind after enough rounds.

And I wouldn't bash Taurus quality now. I used to, but their recent products have impressed me. I even got past that internal lock. But this user recognition system...I may not be able to get past that if they move forward.

4" barrel .357 tracker titanium wouldn't be an ankle gun, it would probably be a gun for an all day hike. Something light that can take down bears if need be, but far more concealable than a large frame gun with a longer barrel.

Oh wait, just looked at the Taurus websight, the titanium version is only 4.4 ounces lighter. Not significant, especially with the added price. Certainly not worth another $200. At 29 ounces the stainless tracker is barely heavier than my HK USP. That's not bad at all. The porting and grips should take care of a lot of kick too. I also wouldn't be concerned putting buffalo bore rounds (bear stoppers) through a stainless gun as much as i would be a titanium one.
