I know that a tax stamp is required for fully automatic firearms, suppressed firearms, and sawed off weapons(and others). But what exactly is this stamp? Lets say I decide to squirt a whole magazine downrange in two seconds and a cop comes? How do I prove that the firearm is legal?

When you apply for the transfer, you fill out a "FORM 4" (in duplicate), which is sent to ATF. It contains your picture, your firearm information and the CLEO signature. When you get the form back approved, it has a stamp attached to it. Just like a postage stamp only for $200 (or $5). You make copies of that form and take it with you to prove legal ownership of your machinegun should anyone ask.

I've had machineguns for around 20 years and have never been asked by a LEO to see my paperwork. Most of them ask if they can shoot my guns, though.

Well, Form 4 is o.k., UNLESS you're lucky enough to be filling out a Form 5.:D

I suspected as much, but would really prefer to have a machinegun transferred to me, tax-free, via Form 5. ;)
