Ok so I did a few searches and didn't quite find what I was looking for. I started reading this thread http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=359341 and decided that a fiber front sight might be good add on for my M&P.

Looking online it appears that fiber sights come in different heights, how do I know which height to choose?

As for color it seems that the pieces of fiber are pretty cheap so I can buy 2 or 3 colors and try as I want, am I correct that these can be swapped without effecting the sight alignment?

Installing the sights? I have never installed sights, I know there is a tool called a sight pusher but dont know how to use one or where to find one.

If I had a smith install a front sight for me what would it cost?

how much does the diameter of the fiber thread matter? (I know I need to get a front sight and fiber in the same size obviously)

Can I use my stock rear sight with a fiber front?

I have fiber optic sights on a few of my pistols. You want to go with the same height as your current front sight. I have both .06 and .04 width fiber in the sights. The thinner fiber seems more precise. Also front sights sometimes come in different blade widths. I have stock width and I also have a narrow sight on a glock that lets me see more light in the rear sight notch. I think I prefer the narrower front blade. It seems faster to pick up the sight picture. I have installed my own sights. The ones with dovetails I knocked out the old sight and knocked in the new. Sometimes you have to rub the base of the new sight on a file to take off a little material so you can get it started in the dovetail. I pound it in with a ballpeen hammer and a piece of sledge hammer handle that is hard wood but won't mar the finish. http://www.dawsonprecision.com/ You can buy just the front sight or their brand of sight sets. If you go with their rear they have a narrower front sight that will work. I have warren/sevigny tactical sights on my glock and they work great. They have them here for the S&W M&P https://secure1.totalink.net/targetbarn/newstore2.asp?CAT=SIGHTS&SubCat=WARRENTACTICAL Here's a pic of the warren sight picture. Here's another place that has narrow front sights. http://www.speedshooterspecialties....=Smith+&+Wesson+M&P+9/40&subcategories=Sights Mark

generally if you call the manufacturer, and say you want a standard front sight for X, they will send you the correct height.

As far as pushing new sights into the dovetail, it can be a royal pain. I've done a few hundred, and have managed to scrap quite a few sights. If your local gunsmith is charging less than $20 or so to do it, its probably worthwhile (plus, if he ruins the sight, its his problem)
