I just bought one on monday for $295. I originally went to the gunshop looking for ammo and to buy a kel tec .380, but they had this menacing looking piece of plastic sitting right out in plain view and I fell for it.

I guess it's a pre-ban one or something. It's closed bolt, but it has the barrel shroud and threaded barrel on it. It came with the case and one mag. I think the dealer said it's a 32 round mag. I shot it yesterday, but only put 25 in it because it was getting hard to load, and I don't want to mess it up if it doesn't hold as many as the guy said.

The second and third time I pulled the trigger it didn't shoot. I'm not really sure what happened. I pulled the handle back and a bullet fell out each time, and there was another bullet in the chamber. The two rounds that fell out didn't have marks on the primer either. The rest of the clip went off without a hitch. That's all I've shot it due to rain, and the fact that it cost me a little over 5 bucks to fill the mag up.

The gunstore dude told me they're pretty good guns, as long as you don't use to much oil on them. He said the gunpowder sticks to it and clogs things up. After 1 mag, the inside of mine was completely filthy.

Other than that, I know absolutely nothing about tec-9s. I always heard they were crap, but most of that was from the media, and they obviously had other motives for badmouthing them and trying to persuade people from buying them. I also know they were near the top of list on the assault weapons ban, and are without doubt one of the most infamous guns ever (and coolest looking too).

So, some of the questions I have are: what's some of the other common problems with tec-9s? How accurate/reliable are they? Do they take a model specific magazine, or can they use the cheap sten gun mags or something? Was $295 a good deal? Are parts easy to find? How do you take it apart so you can clean the inside? Is the value of these likely to increase any, or are they still just throw away fun guns? Any other info or resources about tec-9s is appreciated.

And by the way, if it broke tomorrow and I never got to fire it again, I would still love it like a child. I smiled and giggled like a schoolgirl the whole way home from the gunshop. Owning a tec-9 is a dream come true for me, and probably any other red-blooded american male. Sorry to keep rambling, but it's hard to contain your joy when you're as in love as I am.

I don't know much about them except that they have a reputation for being jam-o-matics. Still could be a fun range toy though. As long as you like it, that's all that matters.

The price you paid is a very good price. They are reliable with full metal jacket bullets, not so much with hollow points. To take it apart, You punch one pin out I believe and separate the upper and lower. Then screw the cap off on the bottom of the upper receiver. Don't use a screw driver in the slot in the cap because it will scratch and mare it up. Use wood or plastic or a rubber pad to get a grip on the cap. Don't screw the cap all the way on tight because it will be hard to remove the next time. Once the cap comes off the bolt and springs comes out.

Some parts for the Tec-9 are easy to get but they are costly. Do a web search on Tec-9 parts and accessories you will find sites that sale them. They take Tec-9 mags only. The value will increase as long as you keep it and the case in good shape. They are not throw away guns. I have seen some that are New in Box for sale for $750. Depending on the shape one is in and accessories that come with it, they sale for $350 to $500 or more. They rust easy so keep it oiled.

Don't grab the mag when you fire it and hold on to it like it is a forend grip because you could crack the plastic lower receiver. They make forend grips for them.

You got a pretty good deal on a semi-reliable single shot pistol that has a chance of firing second shot. I've known two guys who bought them before the AWB. I have to say if cool looks out weighs reliablity, then Tec9 is the way to go. One buddy said Swedish K mags will work, but he never had any to try out.

Coos,

The gun is designed to hold sideways when you shoot. Make sure the mag is sticking out to the left or right of you. :neener:

tec 9

that is a good price...even if you break it it is still worth a couple hundred in parts...i like those kinds of odds...gpr

I got one of these about a dozen years ago

Because a friend needed money and had it for sale. Mine has had a few problems, but generally runs ok. I have tested it right side up, sideways, and upside down. It worked. I was told that it will run all day if you just keep hitting it with WD-40. Can't say for sure if that is true, but mine works that way. Got the case, 4 mags, the slotted barrel extension, and the screw on compensator. The safety is the bolt handle, push it in for safe. Not the greatest system, and maybe the reason yours didn't fire everytime. Or maybe some crap in the bolt.

Takedown is as has been described, push out the pin in front of the mag well, separate the upper, and unscrew the end. Careful of the springs inside it. The regular mag is rated at 32 rounds, and they do get very difficult to load up fully. I have a 50 rond mag as well. Keep an eye on the lower reciever for cracks around the pins.

The earliest guns may have been open bolt (not sure, I know the Cobray M11/9s were), and if so, that is why they are in the $800 range, as "collectors" items. BATF went to a lot of trouble to try and get these kinds of guns off the market, and all the open bolt semiautos did go away, as the makers had to redesign them to keep from being sued. Still legally a pistol, the open bolt guns command a premium price, from those folks who want them.

What you have is a fun gun, a bullet spitter, a legal handgun that looks a lot like an older SMG. They don;t have a good reputation, but if you get one that works, it works. Heavy for a handgun, trigger pull is not very good, and the sights suck. If you don't have the barrel extension (slotted, or the fake "can") be careful you don't get your hand near the muzzle!

Enjoy. I keep mine around so if the wife needs to scare somebody off, I figure that will do it. And it is a LOT lighter than my Tommygun!

Well, I guess I ain't one of them then!

Well, of course it works sideways!
That's the way you were supposed to shoot them!

That way, the mag won't get hung up on the car window in the middle of a drive-by!

A friend of mine has one. It's a jam-o-matic POS.

But you know what?

We always grin like idiots whenever we hold it. That there is worth something.;)

WOW! Didn't realize the mighty Tec 9 was worth that much!

I traded for one not too long back. Scared to say how much I allowed for it! An Intratec DC9 version like that pictured, with shrouded and threaded barrel. Mine came with a factory 35 or so shot mag plus what appears to be an aftermarket 25 shot mag. Was digging around in the junk box at a gunstore and found another factory 35 or 36 shot mag for $20.

Can't say how it works with hollowpoints, but eats ball ammo just fine. Was also somewhat impressed with the accuracy. Despite the crude, non-adjustable sights, the thing was well regulated and consistantly accurate.

Not my style of pistol really, but did seem pretty well made. I thought about ditching it at a gunshow, but after shooting it, decided it was a keeper.

You hear all sorts of rumors about these, as gang weapons, crime guns, killing weapons used at Columbine(true, a Tec 9 version was used), but I think thats a bit overblown. To me, it's just a rather large plinker.
