A 16-year-old girl, found shot in a Tulare garage, insisted to police that she was the victim of a drive-by shooting.
But investigators found other evidence and arrested her boyfriend, Darrell Dillihunt, 19, on Tuesday night. They said they believe he shot her in the lower abdomen with a shotgun during an argument.
She was taken to Tulare District Hospital where she was treated and released, police said.
Dillihunt was held on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and possession of a controlled substance.
At the scene of the crime, in the 800 block of South F Street, the victim, whose name police withheld because of her age, told officers she was walking home when someone in a car shot her. Tulare police Lt. Jerry Breckinridge said she told officers she could neither see who shot her nor a vehicle.
However, officers determined the girl's injuries were not consistent with her statement, Breckinridge said.
"Shotgun pellets spread with distance," Breckinridge said. "Her wounds are consistent with being shot at close range."
Later, officers said, they were told by an informant that the victim and Dillihunt argued, there were two shots fired, and Dillihunt was seen trying to hide a shotgun.
At the hospital, the victim continued to insist she was the victim of a drive-by shooting and that Dillihunt wasn't there at the time.
Dillihunt also denied in-volvement, but police arrested him and found a small amount of methamphetamine in his wallet.
