Suspect fatally shot by officer in Jersey Village area
Quick instincts help protect victim

By Mark Garay
(1/31/06 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - A woman fought back when two men jumped into her car. One of those men is now dead. It all took place at an apartment complex on Pleasant Colony in Jersey Village.

The victim in this case is a Richmond police officer. She left her apartment in plain clothes ready to go to work. But in just a matter of seconds she had to make a life and death decision.

The female officer hopped in her late model Jeep early Tuesday morning and turned the key. That's when it happened.

"A black male with a mask and gloves approached her, put a gun to her head and pushed her over into the passenger side of her car," said Jersey Village Police Chief Charles Wedemeyer.

Then a second masked gunman hopped into the backseat. Police think their intention was to kidnap the woman, rob her and steal her vehicle. Apparently neither one of them had any idea she was a police officer.

Chief Wedemeyer explained, "At that time she pulled her weapon and fired several rounds, striking both of the assailants. One died at the scene. One is wounded at Hermann Hospital."

Police later found a third suspect hiding in what's believed to be another getaway car nearby.

"He has, I think, made a couple of brief statements that they came here to do a robbery and carjacking," said Chief Wedemeyer.

Investigators say the victim is shaken up, but thankful she had police training on her side.

Chief Wedemeyer said, "I'd say that's what we train police officers to do. It has to be a reaction rather than that you have to think about it."

Police have not released any names in the case.

And a sidearm.

She was evidently in condition white though, and very fortunate to have kept her cool, responded correctly and at just the right time.

Although not always by any means, in most such circumstances, your chances diminish the longer you wait to act. Thugs in circumstances like these are most vulnerable in the first first seconds.

Funny they called her the victim. I guess that's better than referring to the deceased perp that way. But she was anything but a victim...

She was the victim of this crime indeed. I agree with you - labeling either of the perpetrators as victims under the circumstances is unjust.

What does this mean exactly? Don't take this the wrong way as I'm not on a personal quest to grill you or anyone else. It's just that this vague statement could get easily misinterpreted.

Not necessarily. When I was in college I was walking to my car at 0130 bcz I had to be back by 0200. I left my gf's dorm and headed to the well lit parking lot. As I approached my car I was scanning the entire place... looking under cars, etc.

Well, as soon as I got into my car and locked the doors I saw a flash of movement in the rear view mirror. I quickly unlocked the glove comparment and retrieved my sidearm. No sooner had I done this than a dark clothed figure was swinging what I assumed was a baton or bat at my window. I stayed layed across the front seat and brought the weapon to bear. It was then I saw the guy had an umbrella in his hand and was tapping on my window. It was a bum asking for money for the bus.

Now, there are no buses running in this town at that time of the morning, but what was more alarming was that he was able to get on me so quickly. I was in a heightened yellow as I always was at night in that town and he still came out of nowhere. This makes me believe he was hiding from me or I am positive I would have seen him. I told him I wouldn't give him any money and he persisted. Since I had dropped my car keys on the floor after unlocking the glove compartment the car was not running so I brought the pistol up to where he could see I was holding one (not pointing it at him yet). At this point he lost interest and walked off.

Now, the purpose of sharing that long story is that you can do everything correctly and still be caught by surprise.

So that means the rest of us would be on our own.....there's something that bothers me about the above statements. If they had picked a civilian female who fought back and shot these cretins, what would he have said. Would he be saying you shouldn't fight back , give them what they want, like they usually do, trying not to "encourage vigilantism" or put them out of business?

Wondering about this double standard.

Right, not necessarily. But that is the way it appears to me.
