Good day to y'all!! I am seeking info on pepper spay/mace type personal defence. I have NO knowledge of these products. I have a 18 year old daughter that is in college full time and works at a bank full time. Full schedule!! Some of her classes are at night and she closes at the bank some nights. There are other folks at the bank so she is not alone there. I wish I could just arm her with a 38spl as she is a pretty good shot with one, but that is not an option now. I want to arm her with a GOOD spray product. ANY suggestions are much appreciated.
What brands are best. Is there a shelf/purse life on this stuff??
Thanks for the help!!!
Jeff

Jeff,
I have not noticed a big difference in the actual chemical properties from one brand to another... there are 3 or 4 various active ingredients, most of which are standardized and work pretty well. The biggest difference I have seen is the spray distance, volume, and length of time in a given charge. In all of those categories more = better. Heck, if she can handle carrying a small can of bear spray, that would work wonders on weaselly would-be rapists.
I would buy a few different kinds and test them out... once you find a brand you like, go for it. The shelf life/expiration is printed on the unit. Remember to test it outdoors in low wind, and spray in the direction of the wind. Covering your skin and eyes is also a good idea.

For most people, it would be good to actually use a can and be familiar with the operation before counting on it. It is possible to buy inert cans to practice with, although one should also get a little taste of what happens with the real stuff. I sprayed a large can of pepper spray with the wind at my back not too long ago and didn't think I had gotten on me, but my mouth, lips, eyes, and hands burned for two days.

I would sugest avoiding the police stuff as most of it is kind of weak beause they have to deal with the people they spray. On cans of OC spray they will have a percent number of OC and the higher the better. I have been sprayed for training with the stuff the marines use and it SUCKED as in I got sprayed and had to complete an opsticle corse and my face burned for days. I would rather stand in a CS chamber naked than get sprayed with OC again. Just remember to tell her to spray and get away fast just because some one can't see doesn't mean they are no longer a threat.
