How does it compare to the 37, strong and weak points?

LGS had one the other day. Said 37 on the tag, but 87 on the barrel. Screw in choke. Rib barrel. Receiver was matte, barrel was blued.

Ithaca has gone through a mess of re-organizations, and during one they changed the pumpgun's designation from 37 to 87. IIRC, this happened in 1987.

Some folks say the 87's fit and finish were inferior. I've not seen enough examples to say.

The parts are all identical.

Disconnector... Heh.

No one ever told me about that lack before I took my Father In Law's Model 37 12 gauge out deer hunting the first time. That second slug firing was one hell of a surprise to me.

I have an 87, along with a good number of 37s. While the quality of the 87 is less than that of the 37s from the 40s-60s, it is easily on par with that of the Kings Ferry 37s. I have yet to have any problems with mine. Be careful if you decide to order extra barrels for your 87, even though they should work with 37 barrels made for guns above 855,000 they don't always headspace properly.
