Is it a "good" FAL?

I fell in love with the SAR-48 when I was about 12 (I sent for a catalog) and shot one a friend had... I've always wanted a good FAL; I think they look cool.

What's a Springfield SAR-4800 worth? Is it a good receiver? What's the difference between the 48 and the 4800?

Don't sent me to the FALfiles... I have no interest in joining any more forums. :D Please distill it down for me. I trust the consensus of this forum.

Thanks!

These rifles were made by Imbel in Brazil. They are first class arms.

I cannot answer your questions about differences between the 48 and 4800, unfortunately.

The SAR 48 was pre-ban and the 4800's post-ban. Only differences are some changes on the 4800's to be compliant with the 1993 import ban....like thumbhole stock and flash hider either being removed completely or permanently attatched.

The values seem to favor the earlier 48's with a premium being charged vs the 4800's. Later 4800's look to be valued about like other factory built FAL's. Maybe $600-$800 for a really clean one. But, value can change drastically depending on your location and how badly someone wants one.

Thanks. Can you put a pistol-grip on a post-ban thumbhole gun?

The one I was looking at had a pistol grip; I just want to make sure it's legal.

Yes you can , I know you don;t want to join another forum but FNFAL forums is where the good info is at .

Thanks. I may have to mosey over there eventually.

I really want a DSA Para. But I like my kidneys and don't want to sell one.:D
