Ten people shot as parties get out of hand in the new year

WARREN, Mich. (AP) — At least 10 people were shot early in the new year as celebrations got out of hand in three Michigan cities.

The most serious incident occurred in Warren, where two men were in critical condition after being shot on the dance floor of a party hall on Eight Mile Road, police said. A woman also was hit by gunfire, but she was treated at a hospital and released.

In Kalamazoo, six people were shot during a party at a hotel on Sprinkle Road. None of the injuries was life-threatening, police said.

And Saginaw police are trying to figure out who fired a stray bullet into the air that ended up hitting a man as he tried to set off fireworks.

In the Warren incident, two men got into an argument during a party around 2:30 a.m., and one of them pulled a handgun and fired, said police Sgt. Michael Torey. The gunman hit his intended victim, but bullets also struck two innocent bystanders, Torey said.

"We just know there was a verbal argument. We don't know what the argument was over," Torey said.

Many revelers scattered before police arrived, he said, adding that detectives already have talked to about a dozen witnesses but no one heard the argument because of noise in the party hall.

One male victim was taken to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, where he was undergoing surgery. Another was in critical condition at a Warren hospital, Torey said.

In the Kalamazoo incident, police said they were called to a Days Inn hotel shortly after 1:30 a.m. when gunshots were fired during a party. Officers from the city's Public Safety Department arrived to find a large crowd and six shooting victims, the department said in a statement.

No further details were available.

About 12:10 a.m. in Saginaw, a 47-year old man was hit by a stray bullet while trying to light fireworks in front of an adult foster care home where his wife works.

Police said someone fired a shot into the air, and the bullet came down and hit the man. He was in critical condition at Covenant Medical Center.

Yeah right, sounded just like a verbal argument to me. The words went something like BANG BANG. People say some pretty silly things.

Some peeps have a different way of celebrating, resolving conflict, discussing, etc. Well, it's cultural, I guess. I've moved into an area that has different values and ways of dealing with things.

Television report said he was hit as he entered the front door. The porch was covered with a roof. Stray shot? :scrutiny:

I saw on our local news last night (out of Birmingham, AL) where an elderly lady was narrowly missed by a .45 ACP bullet which had penetrated her roof and hit the floor close to her bed.
Hey, I admit that I, and my son, rang in the new year by firing off a cylinder of .45 Colt from my hogleg Beretta Stampede. (As I live in the country, I was just trying to keep up with the neighbors. :D ) But anyway, I don't pretend to always be the most sensible of people, but I at least had the foresight for us to shoot against a clay embankment across from my house. Therefore, since it's possible that a bullet coming back down is very possibly lethal, I do wish these fools would be more careful and not shoot their weapons straight up on New Year's! I do want to make it until at least July 4th, when I get to shoot my .45 ACP! ;)

And if they do shoot them straight up, let it be STRAIGHT up, literally, with no wind. It would be doubly helpful if they would stand there until the bullets came down as well.

Shooting into a backstop seems like a perfectly fun and safe way to celebrate the new year. So why can't all the other clowns out there stop drinking for half a second and have the sense to keep people safe like the previous poster?

Anyways, I played videogames on New Years. Shooting was involved.

The problem is alcohol and firearms. The two are diamectrically opposed.
One promotes the loosening of restraints and the other requires restraint.
I will not enter any ground, knowably, where there is alchohol and weapons.
Bad, just plain bad business. The handeling of any firearm when drinking is not recognizable as a sensible thing to do.
Bless

The stupidity of this act is beyond words, it just infuriates me.

People need to pay more attention to the 4 rules.... backstop.

That said, there have been discussions about the lethality of a bullet fired straight up or one that hits a person at great distance from the source. My guess is that the bullets that hit these people weren't fired "straight up", but at a relatively low angle (<45 degrees) to allow for the bullet to still have sufficient enegry to penetrate.

Guns and alcohol do not mix well. Adds a new component to a "Bloody Mary". There are lots of idiots around.
